It took the Emmys to make us realize what hot guys these two actresses have nabbed for themselves. Has Mariska Hargitay’s husband Peter Hermann gotten better looking, or is this the first close look we’ve taken? Peter’s an actor who appeared on Sex and the City. And Jennifer Love Hewitt’s latest boyfriend Ross McCall looks like a keeper. He’s an actor from Scotland who has an interesting background – when he was 10 he played young Freddie Mercury in “The Miracle” Queen video.

ODD PAIRING

Who would have guessed Lucille Ball was a big fan of Tom Cruise! Tom’s ties to Paramount are deeper than we realized. Years ago, after Risky Business was released, Lucille Ball and her husband Gary Morton produced Tom’s next film, “All The Right Moves.” The Mortons and Cruise were considered an odd pairing at that time in Hollywood, but Lucy liked Tom and once described him as “a clean cut all American kid.” Eventually, Tom moved his offices into the enormous Lucille Ball building at Paramount and by the time he left last week, he was occupying the entire structure. So he must be feeling some sentimental twinges.

PIRATES IN REDONDO BEACH

Redondo Beach was up for grabs last week when Pirates of the Caribbean lowered their anchor there to film scenes for Pirates III. Actually the location boat was out in the ocean but the beach town was loaded with equipment trucks, huge trailers, and looky-loos. Everybody wanted a glimpse of Johnny Depp. And they got one. Each night after filming wrapped, Johnny showed up in the parking lot of Captain Kidd’s fish restaurant where he posed for endless pictures with children and signed autographs. A restaurant employee was amazed “He was SO nice to everyone and spent hours with his fans.” No sign of Orlando Bloom.

UNRAVELLING

As readers know, we still insist that Justin Timberlake’s romance with Cameron Diaz is doomed. Justin really cares for Cameron, so he tried to negotiate a clean and friendly split a few months ago. He wanted to be free to have fun on the road when his tour started in the fall. Cameron flatly refused to end their romance and convinced him to spend the summer with her. NOW we hear Cameron was absent from Justin’s NY listening party at G-Spa , although she WAS on the east coast. According to PerezHilton.com Justin made it clear on an upcoming Ellen show that he has NO marriage plans. This romance is unravelling – slowly and surely – wait and see!

NO CLOSE-UPS PLEASE!

Warren Beatty and Annette Bening are Hollywood royalty by anybody’s standards and people seem to love seeing them out in public together. When it comes to dealing with fans they are quite different. At the Emmys, Annette was bombarded by fans asking to be photographed with her. She graciously and patiently said yes to everyone. On the other hand, Warren said NO to everyone. Annette just shrugged off her husband’s stubborness with “That’s just the way he is.” Actually, Warren is super self -conscous about LIGHTING. Whenever he does an interview or appearance he has elaborate flattering lighting arranged to his specification. He doesn’t want to look old. Some joke that the highly political Warren will never run for office simply because he couldn’t control his lighting all the time.

We feel it’s our duty to warn newly divorced and vulnerable Jessica Simpson to proceed with caution in her budding romance with John Mayer. Although he’s not a social climber like Kristin Cavallari, few people realize what a potent casanova the soulful singer is. Those big tender brown eyes hide the same predatory tendancies Warren Beatty was once noted for. He KNOWS what women want. Girls who SWOON over his love songs don’t exactly put up a fight, so John’s batting average is alarming high. Let’s hope Jessica keeps her wits about her and keeps an eye out for warning signs.

He’s still in the throes of divorce, but Prince is in the mood for love. He’s been seen around Minneapolis in his purple convertible with a “mystery woman.” ” She’s petite and pretty with long dark hair, like ALL of his girlfriends. He likes to parade his little “Princesses” around like trophies. Of course they rarely speak – HE does the talking. ” according to C.J. – the Minneapolis Star Tribune gossipist . Last Friday, Prince, clad in a flamboyant shirt, jeans and heels, descended upon the private LA after hours club Xenii ( they LOVE him there and everything is always comped.) He and his petite brunette date and bodyguards got a desirable table but only ordered bottled water. And of course his softspoken female companion didn’t order tequila shots – she sipped water too. It’s HIS way or no way.

A FASHIONABLE WALK DOWN MEMORY LANE

The American Cinematheque screened the documentary “Who Is Harry Nilsson?” last week and we can’t get it out of our mind. Nilsson was a haunting singer/ musician in the 60’s and 70’s who was so cool the Beatles were fans of his. (His song “Everybody’s Talkin’ ” was the theme for the movie Midnight Cowboy.) The documentary has amazing footage of Harry and John Lennon and Ringo and his various famous friends, thirty or forty years ago. Lotsa drugs and booze. Some of my favorite movie moments featured his record producer Richard Perry flaunting astonishing early 70’s clothes – skintight velvet or plaid jackets with pagoda shoulders, shirts with huge dog ear collars, and tiny V neck sweaters with platform shoes. If you love this musical era like we do- see this film.

Left: Here’s Lisa Edelstein (she plays Dr Lisa Cuddy, the hospital administrator on House) and her mom at the L.A Confidential pre-Emmy party at The Cabana Club. She’s WAY more glamorous in person than her TV character. Lisa and her family just got back from a vacation in Israel visiting relatives and she was surprised and flattered when papparrazi picked up her scent there and followed her everywhere. Her family was very impressed!
Right: At the same party I started pondering “Are all the photogenic darlings in Hollywood getting record deals these days? First Paris, followed by Nicole Richie, of course, and now Bai Ling. Bai introduced her record producer named Poet (left in photo) and he told me the music she’s recording is “rather goth , almost spoken word- like Portishead.”
I don’t’ care what those mags say – I get a huge kick out of the way Bai Ling dresses. She livens up every party.

SMUGGLER ELIZABETH TAYLOR BREAKS THE LAW

Is Liz a criminal? If it’s a crime to love your dog too much – then, yes, she is! Recently Liz chartered a private plane to fly her and friends to Hawaii where she was photographed observing the sharks. Nobody paid much attention to the fact that Liz had her beloved Maltese Daisy with her at the hotel, and they were inseparable throughout the vacation. She stayed at the luxurious Kahala hotel where pets are welcome. But the fact is, Liz smuggled her pet onto the island. Animals are subject to a SIX MONTH quarantine (fear of rabies) in Hawaii, so mainland visitors don’t bring their pets. But somehow, sneaky Liz managed to smuggle her Daisy right past officials.

This FHM October layout of Janet Jackson is noteworthy because for decades she has refused to show her legs. Especially in person. She always covered her gams with pants, long skirts, or boots. Check her photographs. Plenty of sexy pictures featuring her cleavage and abs, but no legs. Early in her career she wore nothing but baggy pants and jeans. Nobody knows WHY she couldn’t stand to show her legs. Apparently someone finally talked some sense into her and this picture is the result. Personally, we think her legs look fine, but the awkward pose doesn’t do her justice.

This exceptionally pretty actress LOOKED like she had an ideal marriage and her musician husband seemed to have given up his groupies-on-the-road days for a solid home life. When they announced their split, everyone assumed HE must have been up to no good and she caught him cheating. The public figures him for a heel. But the fact is, HE could no longer tolerate her drug abuse. This ambitious hard working beauty is hooked on powerful prescription drugs and she’s in denial. Her estranged husband is too much of a gentleman to point the finger – so far.

Yuppie looking Andy Dick invaded Tiny’s K.O. – a punk rock dive bar on Hollywood Blvd., and his behavior was decidedly WEST Hollywood. Fortified by many substances, Andy proceeded to squeal “Oh, you’re SOOO cute! Wanna drink?” and he bought drinks for anyone who looked at him. Boozed up Andy hit on the skinheads, mohawked rockers, and a few girls. Incredibly, he started groping and tryng to KISS the fiercely tattooed skinheads. One roared “There’s not enough booze in the world to make me kiss YOU! – grab me again and I’ll WHACK you” Andy chirped “I LOVE to get hit!” Randy Andy topped off his rampage by giving unwanted lapdances to outraged rockers. Nobody got seriously mad because Andy WAS paying for all the drinks. When he collected his credit card before leaving, Andy announced “I’m coming back to BUY this bar!”

The Meadows $4000 per day treatment facility in Arizona has officially become headquarters for Models With Problems. Almost any kind of problems. Elle MacPherson spent time there treating a bout of depression. Kate Moss checked in for her highly publicized substance abuse. Elle recommended the place to Amber Valletta, who just completed a week of treatment there for “work stress, and image issues.” It’s difficult to imagine anyone THAT successful and beautiful being stressed about career and appearance, but it happens. The facility also offers treatment for compulsive disorders – eating, gambling, love, and sex addiction. Maybe someone should tell Janice Dickinson about this place.

Travis Barker has become a hot commodity in Hollywood. Now that he and his wife Shanna Moakler have split up, Travis has been living it up at the W Hotel in Westwood and partying around the clock. His Meet the Barkers reality show put the tattooed Blink 182 musician on he map, and there’s much speculation about his finances. Some insiders calculate he’s worth millions now and his divorce could net him another thirty million or more if he gets half his wife’s fortune. He’s become a regular at the after hours club Xenii and when he was there Friday he wasted no time. He picked up a willing girl and left within fifteen minutes – he dumped his friends and was seen hopping into the girl’s car. Tuesday night he and Jermaine Dupri (no Janet Jackson in sight) – held court at Holly’s in Hollywood. The guys ordered at least TEN bottles of expensive champagne and entertained girls at their table all night. It’s fun to be rich and single in Hollywood.
