The “Godmother of Punk,” Patti Smith, just had lunch at Da Silvano’s in New York. It was way back in 1976 that she first appeared on Saturday Night Live and nothing was the same after that. She was a punk goddess who retired to Detroit for years to raise a family and after her husband died she started performing again. She retains her spirit and style.

This cute actress has been marketed as the next big thing, thanks to her role on a somewhat popular series, but she’ll have a hard time living up to the hype. What will do her in is not her acting – it’s her secret drug problem. She’s addicted to cocaine (it keeps her thin) and it’s ruining her reputation – she’s late for appointments, moody on the set, and looks worn out. Ironically, she’s often been compared looks-wise to a slightly older beautiful actress with the same problem.

It happened in 2000: One of Whitney Houston’s alltime favorite movies has always been the tearjerker “Love Story.” She’s hoping to update and remake the move starring herself and her husband Bobby Brown as the doomed couple originally played by Ali MacGraw and Ryan O’Neal. Whitney realizes audiences might have a hard time swallowing Bobby as the wealthy and refined young man so she plans to switch the roles and have the female character from the right side of the tracks. She’s already working on a script and hopes to start filming before the end of the year. (As we all know, it didn’t work out….)

Esther Wong is the ‘Godmother of Punk, She showcased acts like Oingo Boingo, the Police, X, the Ramones, the Motels, 20/20, the Knack, the Know, the Textones, the Go-Gos, the Plimsouls, the Nu-Kats, the Bus Boys, Plane English, the Naughty Sweeties and others at her club, Madame Wong’s. What an insult your Article is to the great Esther Wong.

Patti Smith is one of the greats, from a time when substance fed style, performers had integrity and intelligence, and the general public was interesting in ideas rather than lifestyle and labels. What happened to the world???
