The best news we’ve heard in ages is the possibility that Chelsea Handler’s boyfriend, hotelier Andre Balazs, is considering building a boutique hotel at the empty Eero Saarinen designed TWA terminal at JFK. The Port Authority is hoping for just this kind of salvation for the architectural masterpiece. The space age terminal was completed in 1962, and reflected the optimism of jet travel of the future. Sadly, it has been empty for years, but is still unsurpassed as the most magnificent and seductive terminal in the world. Those lucky enough to have experienced the terminal when it was functioning felt their spirits soar as they walked into “the world of tomorrow.” (We confess we are very passionate about this structure.) Hopefully, if Balazs takes over, he will keep it as intact as possible. As you can see, it is incredibly photogenic.

Every time “Chelsea Handler’s boyfriend” appears in front his name, Andre’s reputation as a man of taste takes a big hit. 🙁
That said, surely the TSA covets this site as a possible locale for its “enhanced screening and interrogation” procedures!
Lastly, if you haven’t Janet, you should book a flight to Dulles—outside DC; it has an equally spectacular terminal—like a graceful wing taking flight.
I thought she denied dating him. Anyway, it looks like it would take a remarkably talented architect and quite a lot of money to convert that into usable space.
that is a beautiful building and I can’t believe it isn’t being used for something, if not as a terminal…I hope it comes back to life. Can you imagine it as a hotel? Amazing!

I agree the pics are stunning. I have never seen it before and it’s a shame if it’s sitting there empty and unused. If Chelsea’s boyfriend can resuc it I think it would be fabulous. The shape is very beautiful and appealing and I’d love to see what a talented creative person could do with it. Maybe even turn it into apartments?

Who is Chelsea handler? Then to say her boyfriend. From uma, courtney love and now Chelsea? Andre working down the ghetto dirty white trash chicks.
JetBlue demolished the peripheral air-side parts of Saarinen’s Terminal 5 to make space for their newer Terminal 6, and have been using the front portion of Saarinen’s building as an entry point to Terminal 6 since it’s completion. Turning it into an airport hotel is the only way I can think of to effectively preserve what’s left of it and utilize that space at this point.
It’s the only part of JFK that doesn’t deserve to be completely razed and replaced.
