CAN JEREMY RENNER FILL STEVE MCQUEEN’S SHOES?

We confess that we’re torn by the idea of Jeremy Renner starring in the biography of Steve McQueen. Jeremy is so devoted to the project that he’s also producing and set up his own production company to do so. “Bad boy” McQueen was a bigger-than-life movie star in the caliber of Paul Newman, with equally mesmerizing blue eyes. He was known as the “king of cool” and loved fast cars and motorcycles. He starred in “Love With the Proper Stranger,”Bullitt,” “The Great Escape” etc. Steve died in 1980 from incurable cancer in Mexico at the hands of a last-resort quack doctor. The problem is, we’ve always thought of Jeremy Renner as more of a character actor than a romantic leading man. Does he have the looks and charisma to portray McQueen? It remains to be seen.

  1. There’s a very slight resemblance, but it’s not enough. There are some people who simply cannot be portrayed. I suspect Steve McQueen is one of them.

On another topic, thank you Janet for being a Royal Wedding free zone.

  2. No….No way…McQueen was gorgeous and Renner is a bit on the ugly side. It was McQueen looks that got him his star status…it was his cool that keep him there! The person that plays him has to be breathtakingly handsome.

  3. Please pardon me, but Jeremy will Never be able to “getaway” with trying to be Steve in a motion picture!!

  4. YES YES YES!!

Renner is great actor with great talent. The younger movie goers are not so familiar with Steve McQueen, and therefore, the resemblance, or lack of it, won’t be a problem. Can’t wait to see it.

  5. the fact that renner is so passionate about this project tells me he’ll be able to pull it off. wonder if renner will show that mcqueen was not necessarily a nice guy (ali mcgraw backs this up)… a bit of back story: my late hubby grew up in nichols canyon, where mcqueen lived in the ’60s w/ his family, and mcqueen often rode his bike willy nilly through the hills — despite being a dad to two young kids, he was oblivious to safety issues in the neighborhood (lots of young families lived there back then — it was still affordable!). neighbors tried to talk to him about it, but he didn’t seem to care…

  6. It’s been said that McQueen was bi sexual. It’s also been rumored that, well, someone else likes the company of men. So, maybe this isn’t such a stretch at all!

  7. Hillary,

Hollyweird only makes fun of conservatives/republicans. It will not trash its icons such as McQueen unless it’s found out that he was a raving republican.

  8. Yuck! Short little boys trying to portray real men???? That dude needs a mirror. Yuck!

  9. The man lived a very interesting life. I certainly hope that whatever the outcome, or whomever the actor, that they do a good job of the movie.

  10. Alexander McQueen (the late avante-garde fashion designer)?

    Absolutely.

    But STEVE McQueen? No way.

Renner simply has neither the looks nor the machismo/magnetism to pull this one off.

He won’t get any of my money, that’s for sure.

And no, this isn’t like that situation when Anne Rice and myriad fans raised holy hell over the casting of Tom Cruise as Lestat in “Interview with the Vampire.”

Say what you will about him, Tom has, and has always had an intensity that was just made for movie screens. He is, undoubtedly, a MOVIE STAR.

So much so, that Rice publicly rescinded her criticism about Cruise—as well she should; he was TERRIFIC in that film.

Renner, on the other hand may bring his ability to do his own make-up (his former profession), but little else to a project of this kind.

He would have made a reasonably credible Scott Thorsen—the lover of Liberace being played by Matt Damon—or maybe even the role of Liberace himself, for that matter.

  11. pst: STEVE DIN’T LIKE THE TASTE OF SPERM.
that’s why he officially refused to give BlowJobs!!!

  12. With drug induced dieting plastic surgery and the best hair and makeup folks in the biz, he’ll do just fine.

  13. why would he want to be a jerky drunk, wife abusing drug addict.

  14. really? I see his friendship with GMD (Tom Cruise) is paying off…

  15. ^^ Agreed, Selene. And it was reported a few weeks ago that Tom has even tapped Renner to take over the “Mission Impossible” franchise.

A very smart move for Cruise, considering that Renner couldn’t even hope to carry a pair of Tom’s custom-made pumps—on even his best day.

Notice Tom isn’t handing over the reins to COLIN FARRELL, or someone of that caliber.

  16. Josh Lucas

    Paul Walker

    Stephen Dorff…

(Hell, even Whoopi—with the right makeup. :))

  17. Steve Mcqueen was tough and strong and a wonderful actor and my mother really loved his style and grace of an actor and he is a really good looking man and has a strong but tender voice that is honest and for right and most of all a real classic and like-a-ble but it is hard to fill his shoes and I think that jeremy needs to talk to people that loved and cared about Steve Mcqueens family in order to give this roll real justice.
