Cannes Film Festival

WHAT IS TOM HANKS THINKING?

Tom Hanks had an interesting look on his face when he appeared on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival for the premier of his Wes Anderson science fiction film Asteroid City. The movie, set in a desert town in the 50’s, got a six minute standing ovation and good reviews – the visuals are enough to make one swoon. Tom and Rita were standing close to costar Scarlett Johansson when Tom seemed to become rather upset. It turned out to be a non-situation, but Just for fun, can YOU provide a CAPTION for this odd photo? (be creative!)

JOHNNY DEPP: TAKING A GROOMING TIP FROM DONALD TRUMP?

When we saw this photo of Johnny Depp at the Cannes premier of his movie Jeanne du Barry, we immediately wondered if he had started using the same Clinique for Men bronzer that Donald Trump uses .  Depp usually looks rock n’ roll pasty and considerably rougher when playing with his band. Today we learned from Page 6 that since he represents Dior fragrance, the company sent an expensive  crew of beauticians to give him a total makeover at the hotel before he hit the red carpet. They worked on his hair, his face, and dressed him up head to toe in custom made Dior finery.  Some people have all the luck…

GIGI HADID: AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN

Navigating the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival is not easy – you must play by all the rules and above all, try not to fall down and embarrass yourself in front of numerous paparazzi. Gigi Hadid has more experience that most in wearing uncomfortable and highly unfunctional designer clothes, but even SHE must be a little frightened by that long staircase. The glamorous dress she’s wearing is not only restricting, but VERY long. Add that to stiletto heels, and odds of making it up those stairs without tripping increases exponentially…

JENNIFER LAWRENCE: BEST DRESSED AT CANNES

Nice to see Jennifer Lawrence at the Cannes Film Festival looking sensational in red without any see-thru fabric, exposed body parts, or low necklines. (And she has less makeup on than Johnny Depp) She wasn’t there to flaunt herself – she produced a documentary called “Bread and Roses” about the everyday lives of Afghan women bravely fighting the Taliban. She has NEVER looked better……

WORST DRESSED: CATHERINE DENEUVE

The Cannes film Festival red carpet attracts a huge assortment of fashion and it can’t ALL be fabulous. We love Catherine Deneuve, but we do NOT love her gown. The top is the worst. It makes her look like she has a very short neck and the sleeves make her look like she’s shrugging all the time. But the body of the unforgiving dress makes her look as sturdy and square as a refrigerator. And she seems SO uncomfortable! Something softer and looser would be far more flattering for this legendary beauty….

RIHANNA IS NOT ALWAYS RIGHT

Uh -oh. We were afraid this might happen. It looks like Rihanna’scelebration of pregnancy” look has caught on. When Rihanna was expecting she started wearing VERY skimpy outfits that exposed and played up her expanding midsection. Many times the get-ups were TOO skimpy and in questionable taste- especially for occasions like elegant restaurants. This IS a red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival, but Brazilian supermodel Adriana Lima sorely lacks elegance and looks more like a belly dancer than a supermodel here. Using Rihanna as a role model is not always a good idea. This look will be hard to forget…

DITA VON TEESE: RECYCLING COMES NATURALLY

Here’s someone who is NOT basking in the sun like everyone else in Cannes. Dita Von Teese is often seen at the film festival but not on the beach – she protects that beautiful white skin. Dita recently finished her Glamonatrix tour in the UK where her skin was prominently featured. She should be noted for her recycling- Dita only buys and wears vintage clothing. The adorable sundress she’s wearing here is from the fifties. Last year she bought a beautiful turquoise Lilli Ann suit with fur trim that I sold on eBay— and she didn’t ask for a discount. She may LOOK glamorous and unapproachable, but she’s actually friendly and nice!

IT’S NOW OR NEVER FOR AUSTIN BUTLER

No surprises here- Bad Luhrmann’s Elvis is a hit at Cannes and Austin Butler proved to be a hot commodity. It’s a good thing his girlfriend Kaia Gerber (not in photo) was at the film festival to keep an eye on him. In this photo Baz is wearing either an original belt buckle of Elvis’s worth about $100,000, or a knock-off. Actually the entire purpose of featuring this photo is to enjoy looking at the adorable Austin. This movie might change his life…

SHAME, SHAME, SHAME

Okay, ENOUGH is ENOUGH! Even for me, a lifetime fashion victim, this whole “My dress is bigger than yours” idea has gotten out of hand. It’s actually disgusting. It looks like women at the Cannes Film Festival are trying to out-do the over-dressed women at the Met Gala, and succeeding. When you think about all the labor hours and fabric that goes in to making these flamboyant gowns with long trains that are worn ONCE, it is appalling! And overindulgent.

A RARE FIND AT CANNES: A HANDSOME MAN!

The Cannes Film Festival red carpets are always loaded with gorgeous models and actresses dressed extravagantly, but there is very little eye candy for women or gay men. 6’2” Australian model Jordan Barrett adds considerable interest in his white suit, but the festival is invariably geared to please men…
