ZSA ZSA GABOR GOT A ROYAL SEND-OFF

Zsa Zsa Gabor’s house was the place to BE this week – it was loaded with amusing people amused by the vast collection of Zsa Zsa’s personal items to be auctioned off at Heritage Auctions. Our personal favorite was her passport – her birth date had been amateurishly changed to make her five years younger. (In the days before 9/11 she could probably get away with that.) Her husband Prince Frederic set up a glamorous red carpet entrance to the house with blow-ups of Zsa Zsa’s vintage magazine covers. “Zsa Zsa LOVED red carpets!” he told me. Frederic greeted everyone with a hug (he loves media) and was continuously interviewed by intrepid German journalists. Adorable LA historian Alison Martino was in her element, absorbing Hollywood history. Tall slender gay men swooned over Gabor’s 1960’s designer dresses, and everyone agreed that the Keane painting of Zsa Zsa was the coolest item there. A good time was had by all…especially the Prince…

By the way, there are still some great items available – check the Heritage website!

THE PRINCE IS AUCTIONING OFF ZSA ZSA GABOR’S OLD PRESCRIPTION BOTTLES!

We just got an email from our friend, idiosyncratic author Matt Maranian, regarding the Heritage auction of Zsa Zsa Gabor’s personal possessions. He said “Looks like the prince has finally figured out a way to squeeze some money from that marriage!” YOU MUST SEE THIS!
Here’s the link to the huge online estate sale at Heritage Auctions:

We were surprised to see that Zsa Zsa’s husband must have cleaned out every closet and drawer in the house – he’s selling everything from Zsa Zsa’s drivers license and Saks Fifth Ave credit card to her satin clothing hangars AND PRESCRIPTION BOTTLES! Of course there’s plenty of furniture, movie posters (yes, Queen of Outer Space) faux jewelry, and frivolous clothing. This collection is fun to look at, and many items start at $1.00! Something for EVERYBODY!

CHARLTON HESTON: THE HOUSE REVEALS A LOT ABOUT THE MAN

charlton heston14

We are still REELING with joy from a visit to the home of the late Charlton Heston. (Estate sale) Much of what we remember about the actor was negatively tied to his NRA association. But he was a much different person than we imagined. He built his Coldwater Canyon dream house in 1959 with Ben Hur money and the help of architect William S Beckett. And he cherished every carefully thought-out inch of it. (Incredible!) The actor was far more intellectual than we expected – his library and book collection was amazing. And his appreciation of art was evident in his huge collection. Heston was married to his wife Lydia for 65 years until he died, and his two children are both educated and successful and admired their father. Forget politics. He was evidently a decent and intelligent man. Could you ask for more?

MICHAEL JACKSON’S DR ARNIE KLEIN ( THE FATHER OF HIS CHILDREN) IS GETTING RID OF EVERYTHING!

We LOVE estate sales – especially when there’s a celebrity involved! Next week, (Nov 20 to 23) Michael Jackson’s devoted dermatologist Dr Arnold Klein’s Hancock Park home will be opened up and everything is for sale because he declared bankruptcy. (Another reason to love living in LA!) Among the treasures featured on the website are a Vanity Fair photo of Elizabeth Taylor holding a condom, a movie poster of “The Women,” a Michael Jackson stereo system (who knew?) and among the many Michael Jackson items, an autographed photo saying “Thanks for the sperm.” We’re just kidding, but don’t think we won’t be looking for gossipy clues at this event. STING FANS: GET YOUR ROCK MEMORABILIA HERE!

#sting #milescopeland #janetcharlton

Good news for fans of Sting, The Police, or The Bangles – but only if you live in the Los Angeles area. There is a fabulous estate sale this weekend at a big opulent house built in 1923 that once belonged to Raymond Burr and most recently to Miles Copeland III. Miles is the brother of Stewart Copeland from The police and he’s a bigtime music manager who handled these bands among others. Copeland has moved out of the 8700 sq ft mansion, but he left behind mountains of CD’s, gold and platinum records, concert t-shirts, posters, and rock souvenirs of all kinds. These photos of his bedroom and bathroom reveal he lived like a medieval king. Seeing the house is an experience in itself. Click here for details.

HOW WE ENDED UP WITH ART LINKLETTER’S MICKEY MOUSE EARS

#artlinkletter #waltdisney #janetcharlton

Art Linkletter’s widow Lois died recently, and last weekend we went to the Linkletter estate sale in Bel Air. We were very excited to see the amazing mid-century modern house the family lived in and ended up purchasing a few mementos. Art had a pair of Mickey Mouse ears in a glass case in his office that we pounced upon. (Only $5.00!) The estate manager said that Art probably got the ears from his good friend Walt Disney and that Art hosted all the opening events at the Disney theme parks. We found this great old photo from 1959 of the opening of the Monorail featuring Walt, Vice President Nixon and family, and Art in the bubble. Tomorrowland was our favorite place – that’s where we saw the 1960’s House of the Future that sparked our dream of owning such a house someday, and yes, we made it happen.

LARA SPENCER CAUGHT BARGAIN HUNTING AT JAN MURRAY ESTATE SALE

Last weekend we went to the estate sale of the late rat-pack comic Jan Murray at his midcentury modern former home in Beverly Hills. The place was packed with furniture and collectibles – photos of Jan with Sinatra and Milton Berle, Joey Bishop and Henny Youngman – all those old-time Las Vegas comics, and Jan’s massive cuff link collection. We spotted a 1960’s royal blue Italian ceramic turtle on a shelf and were reaching for it when a pretty blonde in short shorts yelled “That’s mine!” It turned out to be Lara Spencer who explained she was gathering items for “a house” she was decorating and scooped up the turtle. We were surprised to hear that the former host of “Antiques Roadshow” and present host of “The Insider” was decorating someone’s house – she never seemed very interested in the furniture on “Roadshow.” But not only is she decorating, but she wrote a book on the subject – being published next October. So she didn’t need Mary Hart’s job on E.T. anyway.
