Eva Mendes’ new ad for Calvin Klein underwear has caused a disturbance in a New York neighborhood. This overheated ad covers the entire side of a building on the corner of Houston Street and Lafayette Street in Soho. SOME of the people who live nearby say it’s too much and want the steamy ad taken down. Others enjoy looking at it.

Anybody who went to high school with Angelina Jolie or Michelle Pfeiffer will probably tell you everyone was in awe of their beauty early on. Hollywood is speculating about why Eva Mendes checked herself into Cirque Lodge in Utah for substance abuse problems. Insiders say “Eva has always been cool, never overindulged in public” and the one thing she struggled with was her weight. Kirsten Dunst checked into the same rehab looking thin as a toothpick. Just about every female celebrity arrested from Paris to Nicole, Lindsay, along with Britney Spears, has had prescription Adderall (which is prescribed for ADHD) in her purse. In Hollywood this drug is not used for ADHD, it’s a form of Dexedrene and it keeps one awake while killing the appetite. (College students love it.) Pills are indiscriminately popped like aspirin day and night. Recently we’ve learned that they are very addictive and can cause all kinds of craziness. Just maybe, this explains why so many Hollywood women are having behavior problems

Eva Mendes is step by step, without fanfare, on her way to becoming one of the most important actresses in Hollywood. And she’s doing it without cheap publicity. Besides being fabulous to look at, she shows up for work on time and gets the job done. Here she is at the opening of the D&G store on Madison Avenue. It’s unusual to see her with a bodyguard because we’ve been at several parties with her and she she’s generally on her own and very receptive and friendly.

The TALK of fashion week in New York is not puff sleeves – it’s the apparent coupling of Eva Mendes and Joaquin Phoenix and their fervent denials. Not long ago they finished the movie “We Own the Night ” but can’t seem to let go of each other. Despite the fact that they have been seen together numerous times looking QUITE affectionate (including last Thursday according to Rush & Molloy,) Eva flatly denies a romance. She insists she still has her live-in boyfriend – a handsome film maker named George Gargurevich, but they are rarely seen out together. We sense the makings of a love triangle.
