HALSTON MAKES A COMEBACK WITH EWAN MCGREGOR

If he were still alive, designer Halston would be THRILLED by the fact that handsome Ewan McGregor is playing him in the 5 episode Netflix biography Simply Halston. The production just started up again in New York after Covid issues and it’s a fascinating story. Young Halston was a hatmaker in 1961 when he made the pink hat Jackie Kennedy wore at her husband’s inauguration. When the 60’s started to loosen up, hats went OUT, and Halston started designing clothes- offering us a peek into the fashion world at that time. By the 70’s, he was a huge success and adored by celebrities such as Liza Minnelli, Liz Taylor, Lauren Bacall and Bianca Jagger, with plenty of partying at Studio 54. Halston’s life story is described as “a cautionary tale of fame, drugs, and sex” so you know there’s a lesson to be learned…

But the Scottish actor is also a dad – he has four daughters with his wife of 20 years, Eve. Our favorite McGregor movies are The Island and The Impossible. Busy Ewan has five movies coming out this year.

Back in August we showed you the trailer for the potentially heartbreaking movie “The Impossible” (CLICK HERE to see it again -and keep some Kleenex nearby) It’s the true story of a family struggling to survive the 2004 tsumani in Thailand starring Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts. Naomi looks beautiful at the Madrid premier and she’s pictured with Maria Belon, the REAL survivor that the story was about.(We’re happy to see she’s alive!) The movie has a December 21 release date.

We’ve always thought that nothing is scarier than reality, and we yawned all the way through The Dark Knight Rises and Total >Recall. But this trailer for “The Impossible” is truly frightening because it happened once and can happen again. It’s based on a true story about how a vacationing family survived the 2004 tsunami in Thailand. Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts appear to be perfectly cast in this catastrophic adventure.

EWAN McGREGOR FELL IN LOVE WHILE FILMING “BEGINNERS”

An onset romance DID develop during the filming of the comedy-drama “Beginners” with Ewan McGregor and Melanie Laurent. It’s about a young man who has a hard time committing to relationships that inherits a Jack Russell terrier when his father dies. As he bonds with the dog he falls in love with an actress. Behind the scenes Ewan fell in love with the Jack Russell played by Cosmo, and couldn’t get enough of the smart and receptive dog. Ewan became so depressed at the prospect of not seeing Cosmo every day after the movie wrapped, that he adopted a small poodle mix named Sid and calls him “my little Cosmo replacement.”

WILL AMERICA EMBRACE JIM CARREY AND EWAN MCGREGOR IN LOVE IN “I LOVE YOU PHILLIP MORRIS?

It looks like American film distributors are still squeamish about gay sex scenes because “I Love You Phillip Morris” starring Ewan McGregor and Jim Carrey has been languishing on the shelf for a year after the film showed at Sundance and the Cannes Film Festival in 2009. The movie is based on a true story about a con man (Carrey) who keeps busting out of jail in creative ways to be with the love of his life (Ewan.) The movie was released in Europe and did reasonably well, but American distributors balked at the love scenes. The off-beat romance finally found a courageous distributor –Roadside Attractions– and it’s set to be released in December.

JIMA CARREY TURNS GAY IN "I LOVE YOU PHILLIP MORRIS"

We’re not huge Jim Carrey fans, but this picture peaked our interest in his new movie. In “I Love You Phillip Morris” Carrey plays a family man who’s also a con artist who gets three years in prison. He falls hopelessly in love with his cellmate (appropriately played by Ewan McGregor.) When Ewan’s character is set free, Carrey’s lovesick character busts out of prison three times to be with him. What’s fascinating is that it’s based on a true story. This looks like a Carrey movie we could sit through, provided he controls his sometimes hammy impulses.
