Now HERE’S a personal mobility device that has potential! We’ve always thought the Segway was too big and clunky to ever be practical. Plus you have to stand up! Honda has developed this “electric unicycle” using technology developed through robotics research and it moves easily in all directions, just by leaning. It will be introduced at the Tokyo Motor Show in Japan on October 24. We do kinda wish that General Motors had come up with this.

Jennifer Lopez IS tired of being a Long Island housewife and it looks like she left that life behind her temporarily while she’s in Japan promoting Samantha Thavasa handbags. Jen looks very young and cute here. She follows in the footsteps of Beyonce and Paris Hilton who have also promoted the popular handbag line.

Japanese ads usually feature only the youngest, hottest Hollywood stars, but Brad Pitt is still a major player there, despite his maturity. Here he is in a cell phone ad – you’d think his Clark Gable mustache would be a drawback, but nobody complained.

Britney Spears put on a cute checkered jacket to peruse the hip Harajuku district in Japan. She was accompanied by and assistant, a bodyguard, and presumably a translator. After a busy day of shopping, she ignored the fanciful Japanese restaurants and headed for something familiar: a modest burger joint (comparable to McDonald’s) called Lotteria.

Also featured in the ads is Japanese popstar Takuya Kimura, who is in the popular group SMAP. The ads, for the exclusive handbag company Samantha Thavasa, will only appear in Japan, as is the custom.

VICTORIA AND DAVID BECKHAM: A WORLD APART

Victoria Beckham appeared on a Japanese TV show called Smap Smap to promote the new Spice Girls, and according to observers she seemed very confused by the language barrier. At one point she got so mixed up that she actually forgot to pout, and SMILED for a photograph. While she was mugging in Japan, her husband David Beckham didn’t seem happy to be left alone. He and two bodyguards – not buddies- went out for some masculine fun at the Saddle Ranch Chop House on Sunset Strip. They killed a few hours but nobody rode the mechanical bull.

MICHAEL JACKSON TAKES THE MONEY AND RUNS
Filed Under: Attitude > Janet Jackson > Japan > Michael Jackson
Michael Jackson took all that money he got from kids in Japan who paid to meet him and flew to London where he checked into the painfully expensive Jumeirah Carlton Tower Hotel under the name “Ms. Jackson” (We think he hoped to be mistaken for Janet.) He occupied the Presidential Suite (around $5000 per night) with his kids, but took up the entire top floor with his entourage, and brought ten beefy security guards to protect him and make sure no one came up in the elevators. He even brought his own waiter and didn’t want any strangers near him. Hotel staffers were terrified of doing the wrong thing. And last we heard, Ms. Jackson didn’t leave any tips.
