The rumor is percolating that Joel Madden’s DCMA Collective store on Melrose has gone out of business. It seems to be true. The shop sold mostly black t shirts, hoodies, and skater gear. Bad timing, since the mother of his two kids, Nicole Richie, and Joel just finally got engaged. Time for Good Charlotte to go on the road again.

We’re still confused by the Star Magazine cover story “NICOLE & JOEL MARRIED!” Star had Nicole Richie and Joel Madden married last June also, but it didn’t pan out. This time Star had many details about their private online wedding ceremony on October 14 conducted by, of all people, Reverend Moon. The magazine also wrote about Nicole’s father Lionel bragging about the wedding and the couple’s friends congratulating them. But Nicole and Joel have called the story ridiculous and insist they are NOT married. Star jumped the gun yet again.

What ever possessed Joel Madden and Nicole Richie to name their newborn SON “Sparrow.” This isn’t even funny. Their daughter Harlow at least has a name with some glamour and it’s sex appropriate. What boy wants to be called a Sparrow? A tiny fragile bird! Imagine the taunts in the schoolyard. The poor kid will probably grow up to be a tattooed bodybuilder to prove his manhood. It reminds us of the Johnny Cash song “A Boy Named Sue” –“if a man’s named Sue, he’s gotta be tough.”

NICOLE RITCHIE IS MUCH HAPPIER IN THE HOLLYWOOD HILLS

Nicole Ritchie doesn’t have to go home to her daddy’s mansion any more. Joel Madden sold the house that Nicole didn’t like in Glendale and bought a new place in the more fashionable Hollywood Hills. Actually he wanted to live closer to his store on Melrose Avenue, anyway. His brother Benji also unloaded his Glendale house (which was a block away from his twin brother’s) and bought a house down the street from Joel’s new place. So they’re still neighbors.

Almost anyone who eats hamburgers in Hollywood loves In-N-Out Burger on Sunset. It’s been reported that Nicole Ritchie has Joel Madden on a diet and that she’s giving him a gradual style makeover. Fashion-wise he looks about the same, but he HAS lost a few pounds. Eating french fries is not a good way to KEEP it off, but at least he’s not sneaking behind Nicole’s back. They were seen at the drive-thru on the day before Thanksgiving.

Nicole Richie is getting restless. She’s not ready to settle into a quiet life in the suburbs with Joel Madden and their baby Harlow. She feels isolated living at Joel’s house in Glendale and she wants to be closer to her favorite places and friends. She and Joel talked about marriage but realized they have different agendas. He’s a workaholic and a homebody when he’s not working. Nicole has no intention of giving up her active social life just because she’s a mom. Lately she’s been staying at her father Lionel’s Beverly Hills mansion more than Joel’s house. AND she’s started going out with her girlfriends. She still sees Joel but he finds it hard to compete with her incredibly wealthy doting dad who pampers and pays her credit card bills.

This could be a match made in heaven. Since Paris Hilton hooked up with Benji Madden, the two have been photographed all over town. And they’re both loving every minute of it. According to a friend of the Good Charlotte brothers Benji and Joel, the twins both aim to date famous women who will increase THEIR fame. And if the women have money, all the better. Apparently the band isn’t making much money and the Maddens love the high life. Joel went from dating Hilary Duff to Nicole Richie. And Benji is loving his newfound attention. As for Paris, we were amused to see HER dressed like a rock chick at LAX.

Now that Nicole Richie has recovered from giving birth, it seems she’s changed her mind about Joel Madden’s career. She used to get a kick out of touring with him but since she became a mom she doesn’t want him going on the road with his band Good Charlotte. She wants him at home with her and the baby. Naturally this is causing serious discussions and major problems because Joel loves his music and he’s loyal to his band.

It just leaked out that Hilary Duff’s lookalike Barbie Doll played a big part in her bustup with Joel Madden! Back when Hilary was working closely with the Barbie people to develop the doll, the issue of how important her good-girl image is came up. Hilary was reminded that she must be a good role model for all those little girls buying dolls. Certain people worried about her boyfriend Joel’s rockstar-punk image. Family and friends expressed THEIR concern over Joel’s future – and questioned whether he just riding on successful Hilary’s coattails. It got Hilary to thinking. She really wasn’t happy with her relationship. Finally the Barbie makers brought up the subject of making a ‘boyfriend” doll for Hilary’s doll – like Ken is to Barbie. But they realized they couldn’t make a tattooed pierced rocker doll of Joel, so they dropped the idea. Not long after that, Hilary dropped Joel.

HILARY DUFF AND JOEL MADDEN: INCOME DISPARITY

Just as we predicted last July, Joel Madden and Hilary Duff ’s romance was headed for disaster. And it’s MORE than their eight year age difference. (Joel was Hilary’s first real romance) Money was the big stumbling block. Their incomes are at opposite ends of the spectrum – Hilary is earning millions with her music and acting and Joel’s band Good Charlotte is struggling to make a comeback. And of course, Hilary is out of town most of the time working somewhere, and long separations ignite suspicions. Joel even had Hilary’s bodyguard reporting back to him on her activities. Finally they realized that although they still care about each other, they just weren’t as happy as they used to be, and they called it a day. Still, we suspect a lot of texting will go on before it’s really over.

ROMANTIC PREDICAMENT

Trouble in paradise for Hilary Duff and Joel Madden. They’re still in love and want to get married, but money is driving a wedge between them. The fact is, Hilary is making MUCH more money than Joel – an insider sniped “She earns more in a week than Joel has in his entire career.” Joel’s band Good Charlotte hasn’t done much in the last three years. Another issue is trust. Hilary is frequently on tour or on location and Joel has her bodygurads reporting her activities back to him. When Hilary is out with the girls and gets someone’s phone number, she writes it on her hand – so Joel can’t find it in her phone. She and her boyfriend have been known to snoop around each other phone books and emails. They’re trying to make it work – but it’s hard when you’re that young and ambitious and in love – ask Justin and Britney.
