We’ve been wondering if Mel Gibson would be able to clean up his image after his drunken rant a few years ago. He chose the right material for his comeback– in “Edge of Darkness” he portrays an anguished father determined at all costs to solve the mystery of his daughter’s death. His character was sympathetic and decent. We were curious about what kind of reception his movie would get when we saw it at a SAG screening. At the end the audience applauded loudly when Mel’s name came up in the credits, so we assume all is somewhat forgiven.

The REAL Oksana finally stepped out with Mel Gibson and it turns out Oksana Grigorieva, 38, is a professional opera singer signed with Icon - a label supposedly owned by Mel. She is also apparently, a lingerie model, judging by this photo. It’s rumored that this Oksana is pregnant with Mel’s child, and THAT’S what caused Mel’s wife Robyn to finally file for divorce. Oksana already has an 11 year old son with Timothy Dalton.

Girls named Oksana have been popping out of the woodwork, some claiming to be his girlfriend, others denying they had a romance. Mel probably doesn’t even remember exactly who’s who.

How Robyn Gibson lasted 29 years married to Mel Gibson is a miracle in itself. Basically, it’s his drinking that broke them up. Almost every dumb or tasteless thing Gibson has done through the years involved his struggle with alcohol. But Robyn knew what she was getting into. Back when he was an unknown actor in Australia he used to get drunk at the local pub with his rowdy pals and the night usually ended with a fight in the parking lot with Mel in the middle. The bartender would phone Robyn and she’d pull up in her pickup truck and his friends would toss belligerent Mel into the back and she’d drive him home. Seven kids later, Robyn is about to become the most eligible divorcee in Hollywood when she gets her half of his 900 million dollar fortune.

Denzel Washington and Mel Gibson were both in Las Vegas last week doing a little “male bonding” with their sons. Denzel brought his wife and kids to watch his son Malcolm play in a big high school basketball tournament, and the family took in several shows. Party loving Denzel also made a point to visit Blush and turned up at Tryst nightclub at 2 AM. Mel Gibson celebrated his son Louis’s 21st birthday at the Wynn hotel – Mel and his boys were seen gambling at the roulette table at 3 AM. They were boisterous and having a lot of fun. (Mel was drinking coffee.)The guys partied, visited the gym and the spa, ate in the best restaurants, and generally had a good time hanging out together. Everybody behaved.

Lakers fans love to “rate” the celebrities when their images appear on the Jumbotron. At last week’s game they made their preferences quite clear. Whenever stars’ close-ups appear on the Jumbotron screen, the fans respond with cheers or whatever. Last week when Andy Garcia’s face appeared, there was applause. When Ellen Pompeo popped up onscreen, there was no reaction at all. Jim Belushi got some claps. As soon as Jeremy Piven’s face flashed onscreen, the audience ROARED with approval! But when Mel Gibson had his closeup – the crowd BOOED. And of course he stuck out his tongue in response.

Bad Neighbor

It’s Sting’s birthday today, but you can bet he still won’t invite Diana Ross to any parties. She upset her Malibu Colony neighbors when she got the gate guard fired because the guy was a big fan and had the nerve to ask her for an autograph. The neighbors, including Heather Locklear, Pam Anderson, Mel Gibson, and Sting, were not happy because they really liked the fellow, who had worked there a long time. Miss Ross is not particularly sociable with the people living near her and keeps to herself. Sting was especially outraged and he worked to get the guard rehired.

While TMZ is reporting on Mel Gibson’s drunk and hateful interaction with the police, another story comes back to us. In 2000, Mel was dining on steamed clams with a few buddies at The Old Place in Malibu and he just couldn’t wait for the bartender to get around to refilling his glass. Much to the amusement of other diners, Mel agilely leaped over the bar and refilled his own beverage. But he’s not all bad. He tipped the server a hundred bucks.
