Even Elton John is cutting back due to the economic crisis. A few years ago he would have held his birthday party at a five star hotel or the hottest new club in town. But for his celebration this year, he rented out the Hamlet on Sunset. It’s a comfy, pleasantly old fashioned, modestly priced hamburger restaurant with a lounge. Dean Martin used to drink there. Elton attracted an eclectic crowd. Joan Collins (who owns a condo in the building next door) arrived with her husband Percy Gibson. Jackie Bisset came with an unidentified man. We always love seeing her. Sometimes RuPaul can slip by in a suit without being recognized. Here’s Chastity Bono. QVC hairdresser Nick Chavez and diet expert Nikki Haskell turned up together. It looks like Elton is getting Star Cruncher exercise equipment for his birthday.

It's RuPaul on the left looking like quite a man, in contrast to a more frivolous moment on the right. RuPaul’s Drag Race is debuting tonight (Monday) at 10 pm on MTV’s LOGO channel which is #146 on Time Warner Cable. It’s a drag reality contest with Project Runway’s infamous Santino Rice and our good friend Merle Ginsberg as judges. Don’t miss it – we hear it’s a scream.

  • It happened in 2000: One of Whitney Houston’s alltime favorite movies has always been the tearjerker “Love Story.” She’s hoping to update and remake the move starring herself and her husband Bobby Brown as the doomed couple originally played by Ali MacGraw and Ryan O’Neal. Whitney realizes audiences might have a hard time swallowing Bobby as the wealthy and refined young man so she plans to switch the roles and have the female character from the right side of the tracks. She’s already working on a script and hopes to start filming before the end of the year. (As we all know, it didn’t work out….)
