We couldn’t resist attending Julien’s auction of Barbra Streisand’s latest collection of items she doesn’t want any more. Apparently she LOVES to shop and accumulates huge quantities of furniture, art objects and clothing. We’re not surprised by the vintage furniture and lamps and paintings, but the personal items that most people would just throw away were up for sale too. There were two lots of unglamorous old flat sandals and beat up bedroom slippers that probably pre-dated James Brolin. Her loyal fans spent nearly a thousand dollars for the worn footwear.

Sometimes the audience at a fashion show is as compelling as the show itself. These front row A-listers at the John Galliano show in Paris are mesmerized by the extravagant fashions. Glammed up Katy Perry and Russell Brand are holding hands and look quite cozy. Prince’s red satin shoes are eye-catching but no competition for the shoes Galliano presented. This must be the year of The Outrageous Shoe.

ALEXANDER MCQUEEN’S EVOLUTION OF THE HIGH HEEL SHOE

Hot on the heels of Richard Dawkins’ book defining evolution, designer Alexander McQueen became inspired by the notion of Darwin’s The Origin of the Species, and these shoes and fashions were the result. His collection featured feathers and amphibian scales and prehistoric greenery. (The models even have gills on their temples.) The pinnacle of the collection, however, are the 12 inch high booties that resemble animal hooves. We’d like to see an X-ray of the position of the model’s feet inside. Walking a catwalk can be dangerous.

KIRSTIE ALLEY DOESN’T NEED SHOES TO SUPPORT SCIENTOLOGY

Kirstie Alley showed up BAREFOOT for some reason, to the Monte Carlo Benefit held at her Scientology friend Nancy Cartwright’s house in Northridge. Nancy, who happens to be the voice of Bart Simpson, is an avid Scientologist who not long ago donated TEN MILLION DOLLARS to the cult specifically to fund Scientology’s “war on suppressive people.” (That is, people like us, who criticize Scientology.) So far they have not WON the war. The proceeds from the Monte Carlo benefit are donated PAL (the Police Activities League – yes the police happily accept donations from Scientology. Buttering up the cops is always smart!) PAL is opening a Youth Center in Northridge where kids can play sports and be brainwashed by Scientologists. Parents beware!

We knew Salma Hayek was tiny, but she REALLY looks petite in the photo taken when she appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Salma is wearing eight inch sky high platform heels and she’s STILL the shortest one by FAR in the picture! No matter- she married well (billionaire Francois-Henri Pinault) so she’ll never have to worry about her lack of height, or much of anything else for that matter.

Victoria Beckham is going to be very jealous when she sees these shoes that Jennifer Connelly is wearing in InStyle. These black leather creations are 8” high and delicately balanced. Speaking of “Creation” – that’s the name of Jennifer’s new movie. She’s costarring with her real life husband Paul Bettany who plays English naturalist Charles Darwin. He’s trying to publish his theory of evolution and she plays his religious wife who is appalled at the notion which implies there is no God.

It’s Marla Maples and her 16 year old daughter Tiffany Trump, who bears a strong resemblance to her dad Donald. Marla IS famous for busting up Donald and Ivana’s marriage, but we like to remember her for that “shoe fetish” incident. Forty pairs of Marla’s high heels gradually disappeared and she caught her own publicist red-handed on tape stealing them for sniffing and cuddling purposes! They day after she performed in the city, Beyonce and her sister Solange and nephew Daniel, 4, walked around and took in the sights. Beyonce wore six inch platforms while Solange chose more comfortable gladiator boots.

Project Runway favorite Christian Siriano has been worried about how he’s going to make a living. Despite his successful Bryant Park show, the economic downturn has NOT helped his business. Payless Shoes came to the rescue and signed him up to design a line of low price shoes and handbags for next season. Christian is looking on the bright side – he’s grateful. He said that his fans are young and usually can’t afford his designs, but now everybody will be able to buy his brand.

We’ve always been fascinated by men wearing elevator shoes so we were delighted to see this photo of Jonathan Rhys Meyers and his intricately built up boots. He’s currently filming The Tudors at a castle in Dublin. Jonathan plays the notorious Henry VIII and at 5′9″ he just isn’t imposing enough. These leather boots were constructed with lifts outside and inside. It looks like they add around four inches to Jonathan’s height. He’s accustomed to wearing heels – remember, Jonathan plays basketball in cowboy boots.

So THAT’s how Meryl Streep is making herself tall enough to pass for Julia Child! (Meryl is currently filming “Julie & Julia” in Manhattan.) Take a look at those high wedgies. Meryl is only 5′6″ and Julia, who incidentally was born in Pasadena, was a very memorable and hulking 6′2″. Meryl always likes to be authentic in her roles, so she would insist on appearing tall. We’re betting her shoes will always be out of camera range.

Prince debuted some new footwear during his performance at Coachella. Usually he wears pointy high heel boots that he has custom made in a color to match every outfit. His new look is a more comfortable round toe platform boot with what appears to be a high lucite wedge. It still gives him that much needed extra four or five inches of height.

The Stepford Wives of the polygamist cult in Texas had it worse than we even imagined – at least in the fashion department. Women who didn’t adhere to the strict pioneer style clothing and modest demeanor that the men decreed, could NOT go to heaven. Every day, women piled on four or five layers of underwear, leggings, and slips. Over it all they wore their handmade pastel POLYESTER dresses – because polyester is considered practical and “lasts forever.” Imagine dressing like THAT and working under the boiling hot Texas sun! Bright colors- especially red- were forbidden. Sensible Skechers lace up shoes completed the fetching uniforms.
