Sylvester Stallone received a Filmaker Award at The Venice Film Festival and his appearance got the British tabloids buzzing. He was described as wearing “orangey” makeup and it was pointed out that Sly could arch his eyebrows without creating any creases in his forehead. We compared this smooth look with an early photo – and sure enough- he had more lines on his face thirty years ago. Sly treated the Venice audience to a sneak peek of some scenes from his latest effort “The Expendables.” (We wonder if the movie had botox in the budget.) Regardless, for 63, Sly deserves credit for looking better than most.

Sylvester Stallone is just finishing up his movie “The Expendables” which he wrote, directs, and stars in. (Consequently, you can expect many shots of his ripped torso.) Above, Mickey Rourke is tattooing Sly in a still from the movie. As we told you, the story is about a secret plot by several nations to overthrow a dangerous South American dictator. The best mercenaries from around the world are hired to do the deed and they are played by tough guys Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, and Jet Li, among others. Bruce Willis is also in the film and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is supposedly making a surprise appearance. It’s an 80’s style action extravaganza!

Sylvester Stallone is all pumped up and ready to start filming “The Expendables” which he wrote, will star in, and direct. It’s about an international team of mercenaries whose secret mission is to assassinate an evil South American dictator. And what a cast: besides Stallone, there’s Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li, Mickey Rourke, Jason Statham, Eric Roberts, and possibly Arnold Schwarzenegger and 50 Cent. It sounds like those “Dirty Dozen”/”Magnificent Seven” movies from the 60’s.

A photographer who took this picture of Sylvester Stallone walking in Beverly Hills labeled it “Sylvester Stallone and Frank Stallone” and added that he was amazed that Sly looked so much more youthful than his brother who is four years younger. “It must be the grey hair” the photographer surmised. Actually, we think this is Sly’s FATHER Frank Stallone Sr. – not his brother is Frank Stallone Jr . Frank Jr is said to be getting his own reality show.

Sylvester Stallone and family are in Rome where his wife Jennifer is teaching their three daughters Sistine, Sophie, and Scarlet, how to shop. Recently Sly bought lakefront property on Lake Sherwood in Thousand Oaks where he intends to build a weekend getaway house with a view of the lake. Sylvester Stallone has been TALKING about doing a movie on the life of Edgar Allen Poe for decades and it looks like he’s finally going to pull it off. Sly wrote his own script on the American writer’s madly tortured life and mysterious death in 1849, and he plans to direct the movie, but NOT star in it. First, Sly considered Robert Downey Jr for the lead. But he ended up offering it to Eastern Promises star Viggo Mortensen. Viggo DID ask for a few script changes, but it looks like it might happen.

Insiders say Sly really wants to be the bigtime player he used to be in Hollywood, and a lot depends on the new Rambo he recently finished. He even leaked the trailer early to try and get some response. Stallone, 61, knows the studio wants his to look 45 in the movie, and his body is bulging with muscles. Last week Sylvester Stallone and his mullet returned from Burma where he filmed John Rambo, and he heaved a sigh of relief. Sly told friends it was really scarey filming there – that many of them don’t like Americans and he was driven around in an armored car. Usually Sly likes to fly his Jennifer and the kids in for a visit wherever he’s filming but he decided it was just too dangerous. The fact that Rocky Balboa was a success, despite the maturity of the leading man, has opened more doors than one. Sylvester Stallone is proceeding with his Rambo movie and older dogs in Philadelphia once deemed undesirable, are being adopted! Rocky rescued an old unwanted dog from the pound he named Punchy in the movie, and the loyal dog ran along with him on his workouts. Apparently Punchy made such a good impression that Philadelphia pounds are reporting that adoption of older dogs has gone up 60 % and they credit the movie.

Sylvester Stallone isn’t too worried about the drug charges against him in Australia. He was detained when 46 bottles of human growth hormone were found in his luggage that were undeclared. These are considered to be performance enhancing drugs like steroids in Australia. The worst that could happen is that Stallone would have to pay $96,000. The interesting part of the story is: what was he doing with these drugs? It seems Stallone’s mom Jackie encouraged Sly to start taking GHB twenty years ago to keep him young. Originally the meds were used to make short children grow taller. We don’t know if Sly got taller, but the drugs are also described as “feel-good” drugs or “the fountain of youth.” They became very popular in the 80’s with wealthy people who wanted to retain their vigor and youthful appearance. The pricey drugs are supposed to build muscle and keep weight down, increase skin elasticity and boost energy. Sounds good, but doctors clash on whether the drugs are safe, so their legality varies. We’re told that people who take them are afraid to stop because they might suddenly get fat, lose muscle tone and energy, and have aging sagging skin – all leading to depression! So the jury is still out on these drugs, but Sly seems to believe in them!

She and baby Lourdes recently spent an afternoon at the Schwarzenegger family compound tossing ideas around.

1999, Sylvester Stallone made a new best friend – a five thousand dollar rare tiny dog. Sly splurged on a brand new breed called a Munchkin and he’s so smitten the he-man carries it everywhere. The three pound pup got sick on the set of “Get Carter” and Sly was distraught until the delicate dog recovered. Now Sly has a vet on call.
