The summer of 2023 has revealed the power of women. Females are dominating the movie world AND the music world. Greta Gerwig’s Barbie had the biggest opening weekend of all time for a film that was not a sequal. The third weekend is expected to bring in a worldwide total of a billion dollars! At the same time, Taylor Swift concerts and albums are smashing records. She’s the first living artist in 60 years to chart 4 albums in the top 10 at once on the Billboard chart. In ONE day she sold over two million tour tickets and held the top 10 spots on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for her Midnights album. Keep in mind, Beyonce’s tour is also raking in the bucks. It’s high time the power of women both as performers and consumers is recognized…

THE BEST THING ABOUT BARBIE

Warner Bros publicity department must be dominated by women because they did ALL the right things when it came to promoting Barbie. The film has broken all records with one of the biggest weekends in history! So what if they misled the SAG/AFTRA union (see https://janetcharltonshollywood.com/?s=fran+drescher) – it was WORTH it! The best thing about Barbie is not only did it celebrate the importance of women, but it was directed by the extremely likable FEMALE Greta Gerwig. Barbie is the TOP opening film of 2023 and has NOTHING to do with male superheroes! Right now we’re thinking that more than a few of those male CEO’s at Warner Bros should be replaced by females…

DOES JOHNNY WEIR HAVE A PROBLEM WITH WOMEN?

We were struck by the message on skater Johnny Weir’s t- shirt – and not in a good way. Is he mocking women? NOT every woman is beautiful – and that is a fact. This statement is demeaning because there are far more important traits than beauty- women can be brilliant, kind, funny, creative, whatever. (Can you imagine a t-shirt saying “All Men Are Handsome?”) This All Women Are Beautiful statement was probably started by a cosmetic company attempting to flatter customers. Johnny Weir is not doing women any favors by projecting this silly statement – it is quite insulting. You’d think he would know better…

We are among those who think Borat was the smartest, funniest, and most original movie EVER. Borat’s hilarious psychological torment of well-meaning Americans is genius. And hard to live up to. Sacha Baron Cohen’s movies have been gradually becoming less interesting. The Brothers Grimsby has been publicized to death by the energetic Cohen, to no avail. Why? Because Cohen LOST HIS FEMALE AUDIENCE. His comedy degenerated from Borat’s brilliant satire on politically correct behavior to raunchy bathroom humor aimed at the teenage boy audience of Adam Sandler. Not to mention the fact that Grimsby is all about sports, action, and guns. Sacha Baron Cohen lost his most faithful core audience – women. Finally, a male celebrity has to courage to condemn Bill Cosby because of those sexual assault allegations! Most of his contemporaries avoid the issue, but Jay Leno didn’t mince words. He said “I don’t know why it’s so hard to believe women. You go to Saudi Arabia and you need 2 women to testify against a man. Here you need 25!” We love Jay for saying this, but we have to give credit to his wife also. Mavis has been fighting for women’s rights in Afghanistan for YEARS and she keeps Jay educated on the subject.

ANDREW DICE CLAY: SORRY, BUT YOU DUG YOUR OWN GRAVE !

In his new book, Andrew Dice Clay claims that protesters (feminists) killed his movie “The Adventures of Ford Fairlane,” and probably his career. But we are here to tell Clay that he DID go too far in his attacks on women. We happened to be fans of Clay and when we got tickets to see him perform at The Hollywood Bowl (around 1990?) we were excited. When we arrived with our friend Belissa, we were amused to see that the audience was mostly guys – very few women. When the Diceman started his act, it became clear WHY women were scarce. He went into horrible, unspeakable rants about ex-girlfriends and suddenly it wasn’t funny, it was scary. The men in the crowd were drinking and cheering on the female bashing! The audience became SO raucous and vulgar – like wild animals- that we sneaked out early, fearing for our safety. Clay‘s fans took his insults SERIOUSLY and seemed ready to attack the first woman they saw! It’s too bad Andrew didn’t see the damage his over-the-top female–bashing did, and adjust his act before it hurt his movie and career. That’s OUR side of the story.

Finally. Hollywood producers are impressed with the success of Lucy (which trounced Hercules) The Hunger Games, and Maleficent, and they are toying with the idea of making more movies with female leads. Apparently they forgot that women comprise 52% of moviegoers. This SOUNDS like good news for women who are tired of all those dumb male-oriented action movies, BUT, it appears that these producers are talking about making the same stupid repetitious comic book action movies – only with women in the leading roles! It’s an insult to women who actually crave intelligent movies with storylines. More movies from a women’s point of view – YES! Cartoon hero movies with women- NO THANKS!

SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE PRODUCER LORNE MICHAELS FINALLY WISED UP

Lorne Michaels finally came to his senses and acknowledged that Saturday Night Live had a glaring shortage of diversity – particularly women of color. (He was reminded very publicly, and wisely chose to act upon it.) After secret auditions he hired Sasheer Zamata as a new cast member, but there’s a bonus. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Michaels apparently found more talent than he expected among minority women, and he added TWO black female writers to the staff! (LaKendra Tookes and Leslie Jones, above) Now THAT’S a step in the right direction.

CAN WOMEN IN AFGHANISTAN HAVE A HAPPY NEW YEAR?

The season’s first snowfall in Afghanistan brought out these bundled up women waiting for a bus in Kabul. Keep in mind that women in Afghanistan have the lowest life expectancy in the world – 42.5 years. Adding insult to injury, busses don’t bother to stop at all if only women are waiting – they drive right by. And if there are men in the waiting group, they shove their way to the front so they can get on first! Women in Afghanistan don’t stand a chance.
