DESIGN STAR: MEDIOCRITY IS THE PARAGON

We’ve been bombarded with publicity for “Fashion Star” that debuted last night, and being big fans of “Project Runway,” we made a point to see it. It’s much glitzier than “Runway” – the set is extravagant and features a runway for the numerous mini-fashion shows. Host Elle Macpherson is a bit more likeable than Heidi Klum, and the judges, Nicole Richie, John Varvatos, (yes, they have men’s wear too!) and Jessica Simpson, are observant and talkative. The gimmick of having buyers from H&M, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Macy’s, purchasing the designs they like for their stores is innovative. But there’s one big fat problem: the fashions are beyond boring! The first group of designers presented creations we’ve already seen and walked past in stores for YEARS. “Runway” designers are encouraged to be innovative, “Fashion Star” competitors are urged to please the masses. It’s difficult to imagine any of these designers becoming successful with such UNMEMORABLE clothes. Perhaps having to please chain store buyers stifles creativity- it might be better to have cool boutiques doing the buying.

  1. John Varvatos must really need money or have a sad desire to be a real celeb to be involved with the likes of these people. Nicole Richie??!! She is not a star she is the kid of a star who hung with a tramp. Poor Jessica Simpson is just simple.

  2. I really liked this show!

That is in essence WHY this show was created. Because it does “please the masses”. The “masses” being everyday people who can afford to shop at these stores. Not everyone can purchase one of a kind designer fashions. They are more interesting yes, but not very realistic. IMO

  3. Oh well, what an interesting little crew. They would not have been my pick. All have major diva-tudes. I bet there is some awesome backstabbing and bitching going on that set.

  4. Janet, get New York magazine from a few issues back–nothing has changed in the last 20 years–fashion, car design, etc.

  5. In this picture, Nicole’s face is over photoshopped, as is Jessica’s body shape.

  6. In this photo Nicole Richie is almost unrecognizable. I missed the show, but am interested in fashions that please the masses. I love Project Runway, but I’m often confused by what the judges praise.

  7. Nicole Ritchie is that photoshop or plastic surgery
Jessica’S wig is bad. Elle looks good but a bit manish looking.

  8. I think people like to look at high fashion, but how many want to buy it (or can afford to buy it). I think the show is a good idea because normal people buy and wear normal clothing, not the unrealistic clothing runway models are celebrities are strutting around in.

  9. More likeable than Heidi Klum you say? Janet in what world do you live? I think PR is so much better. Yes PR has lost something since it moved to Lifetime, but it is still better all the way around. I too often wonder what Michael Koors and Nina Garcia see that I don’t but that is part of the show and come on Tim Gunn just can’t be replaced. That is my thoughts at least. I saw this mess once and won’t be watching it again.
