DICK CLARK’S AMERICAN BANDSTAND GAVE US OUR FIRST LOOK AT ROCK N ROLL

Our fondest memories of the late Dick Clark were in glorious black and white. His American Bandstand, which was on TV after school every day, rocked everybody’s world. We all heard rock n’ roll on the radio but rarely got a chance to SEE the performers – from Fabian to Conway Twitty to Chubby Checker. (There was no MTV in those days) Clark was a huge influence in the world of rock n’ roll. We learned the latest dance moves watching his show and got ideas for haircuts and fashion. His original TV show from Philadelphia taught kids how to be teenagers. Thanks for the memories Dick Clark!

Update: Love this quote from from the Los Angeles Times: “Dick Clark chaperoned American youth on their first date with rock n roll.”

  1. Sooo sad! He was such a seemingly nice man, who was admired by all!

He was the best looking 82 year old I’ve ever seen!

  2. I was a big fan of the American Bandstand and the Midnight Special (which was my favorite).

May he rest in peace. The man knew how to market himself and shows. Amazing person.

  3. Ah Walt, I forgot about the “Midnight Special”. Back when I could actually stay awake past 10:00 p.m.

He was a true musical icon and many artists owe him for giving them exposure.

Love the photos above: rockin’ the beehives.

  4. Once in a great while, a celebrity influences my life in such a way that when they pass away, I feel like I’ve lost a friend. I felt that way when I read about Dick Clark’s death last night. He was so influential and lovable that it’s hard to even wrap our brains around what a legend he really was. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. He will be truly missed.

  5. Okay Imma say it: Republican and a mean man. Not crying over here.

  6. I Love the show and used to watch it each week and used to jump out of my seat and start dancing and some of my friends ended up on the show in the pass and so that was great.

  7.
