DOLORES HART CHECKED OUT OF HOLLYWOOD AND INTO A CONVENT

Dolores Hart shocked Hollywood when she abruptly walked away from her acting career in 1963 and became a nun! She’s probably most famous for her movies with Elvis Presley and our favorite “Where the Boys Are.” All these years she’s been cloistered in a convent in Bethlehem, Conn, but the 40 nuns living quarters are desperately in need of refurbishing so she is trying to help them raise money. (Surprisingly, she is still a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and she receives copies of all nominated movies to watch in her cell, and she votes for winners.) Since the abbey needs 4 million dollars for renovation Mother Dolores, 73, has even appeared at an autograph convention where she sold autographs and photos to raise money. She is the order’s main hope for fundraising, so we may be seeing more of her.

  1. I always found that interesting that she was a young lovely actress that went from Elvis to a convent.

I’ve often wondered how many young lovelies had gone from the convent toward the wilder side because of the hunky singing Elvis.

  2. …the most adorable story I have heard in quite some time! What a cool lady. She has learned how to balance religion and “real life” very nicely.

Now this is a lady that I would definitely trust and respect!

  3. I’m sorry but that restrictive way of living makes no sense to me. The habit she is wearing also seems archaic, unnecessary and has nothing to do with being spiritual. Reminds me of an ex nun I know who said when she was in the convent and wore such clothing, there once was a fire in the middle of the night. The nuns had to evacuate. Now, the nuns there felt you had, at all costs, always cover your head and hair when not alone in your cell. My friend remembers one nun running down the hall without her head covering she could not find. Instead she propped the habit she was wearing over her head. Unfortunately she wasn’t wearing underwear. My friend says to this day she has the vision this poor woman running down the hall bare ass exposing her netherlands just to protect her hair. Like much found in formal religion, what they do doesn’t make much sense or is practical.

  4. Lot’s of action going on between the nuns and in many convents.

Most likely Dolory was knocked up and gave the baby away and decided to become a nun over the experience.

  5. LOL at lippp. What a funny vision that would be.

Strom, you have such a dirty mind.

  6. By Indy’s Ghost,

Thanks a bunch! I will take your comment as a compliment considering that you are posting as an anonymous chicken shit!!

  7. Not that she needs defending, but Muffie!! is Muffie!! and Indy is Indy/Christine India. Not aware that they post under different names.

  8. Great story! 🙂

And as it turns out, one of our favorite actresses of all time—Patricia Neal—is buried on the Abbey’s premises. She was a good friend to Dolores Hart and a benefactor to the convent.

Can’t recall ever having seen Hart’s films, but NetFlix “Hud” to see Patricia in her Academy Award winning-role (not to mention her co-star Paul Newman—sublime).

  9. The story I heard was that he knocked her up while on that movie together and she went off to the convent to have the baby and stayed there. Wonder where the kid went or if anybody could track it down. What a trip to find our your pops was Elvis.

  10. Elvis threw the monster fuck of her young life into her.
    She found god.

  11. Good for her to come out to the world and allow other people to see her and know the true blessing is hear and this is the wonderful woman who is going to help others in need and…It is great that she is shareing the moment that special like this and lets face facts not every one the world has been blessed to cross path with the king of rock and roll.

  12. It is a Blessing that your able to show the world where your at and what your doing and how you want to help others in needs but your calling to the lord was greater and you felt that you wanted to go down that path of love and concern and care…God has picked you to be here on this earth to share your gift of running across a man who is like no other in this world….To talk with him and to walk with him and to spend time with him is a true gift….Too bad Holly wood is not knocking at your door to create a movie about the time you spent with The King of Rock and Roll that would be a movie that…I Would Love to see and over the years and to know your feelings and thoughts about the man and when he Died the feelings of what you where going throw would be a good movie in the making…There are so many stories about the man but to see your point of view would add fresh-ness to the future!
