Always one of our favorite actresses, Mira Sorvino was one of the early and brave women who accused Harvey Weinstein of sexual improprieties. Mira won a Best Supporting Oscar for her ditzy character in Woody Allen’s Mighty Aphrodite, but few people realize she is actually very intelligent and educated. She graduated with honors from Harvard and has a degree in East Asian studies. We were so happy for her and Ashley Judd when Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson came out and admitted that Weinstein had said the actresses were “a nightmare to work with” and advised him not to hire them, thus blacklisting them and derailing their careers. Happy ending: While Mira’s acting career waned, she married her dream man and had four children, and now she’s back at work.

We certainly hope she’s back–she’s one of our favorites, too.
But surely Harvey’s poisoning-of-the-well is only one part of story; after Mira’s stunning debut and awards win, she developed a nasty rep for high-handed behavior–all on her own. 🙁
One such incident made the gossip press, when Mira lambasted an underling in front of onlookers with: “How dare you speak to me in this way!! I HAVE AN OSCAR!!”
While Harvey apparently caused Jackson to take a pass on her, wouldn’t other producers and directors have come forward to say that they too, had been warned off, if that were the case?
We think Mira will be much kinder to all, this time around. Her emotional response to Jackson’s admission–she says she read his tweet and immediately burst into tears–is just one hint of how unhappy her time-out has been.
And speaking of Mira and Ashley: they BOTH played Marilyn Monroe in a TV project called “Norma Jean & Marilyn”; it sounded like a long shot, but oh, my–was it good. Ashley was excellent, but there were some scenes where Mira so inhabited Marilyn’s voice, mannerisms and physicality, that we were simultaneously mesmerized and heartbroken. Mira was wondrous.
She’s wearing sensible shoes and didn’t hack up her face with plastic surgery. As far as celebrities goes that makes her a genius. So nice to see a celeb not wearing those stupid Laboutins while sporting wind tunnel face.
