EDDIE VAN HALEN CAN STILL PLAY GUITAR, BUT CAN HE STILL “JUMP?”

Wow, we wouldn’t have recognized Eddie Van Halen, 56, if we bumped right into him! He’s changed a lot, but he’s survived tongue cancer and rehab and he’s still making music so we have to give him credit. The last time we saw him perform a few years ago he looked like a bum with rotten teeth and his feet flapping out of his shoes. He’s cleaned up and above, he’s with his new wife Janie Liszewski leaving their hotel in New York.

  1. Walt what is it with these rib bbq’s? And where is my invite 😉 I have watched the odd BBQ cook off on the food channel. Perhaps this is an American custom, as I have to say I have never been at a bbq that has ribs. The competitors took it so seriously, had their own special sauces. It was interesting and looked yummy. In my country we tend to bbq cats and dogs, no, I’m just kidding.

  2. who cares?
    let other people JUMP, eddie.

    (he jumped enough, folks)

  3. She looks a Tad bit like rebbeca demoney from the hands that rock the cradle an romona from the housewives from NYC. Good to see him better and hopefully she is taking care of him.

  4. The best living rock guitarists ever. Nice to see him lookin (and probably smellin) better !!!

Cal, you have a open invite just like Leo and Denise (and Patrick, and Indy….etc.). Better start bring an empty stomach because you will eat like a king. I have rub that is to die for and the sauce…..well, that’s a big secret. LOL!

No meat on the puppies and kittens, (LOL!!!). We use pork ribs and pork butt! 🙂

  5. In his heyday he was one really cute guy. That smile! Living hard has taken its toll, but it’s good to see him clean and (hopefully) sober. And I’m sure he’s still one of the greatest guitar players.

  6. I hated Van Halen live. They were awful a couple years back in Vancouver. Stunk the place right up. Tragic because I like the early Roth stuff. Apparently they are better on this tour.
Walt, saw Deep Purple a couple weeks back and they blew the doors off the arena. Everything you want in a rock show and more. Everyone on their feet for the whole show and big smiles on all the old timers faces. All killer no filler. Starting the show with Highway Star didn’t hurt for sure.
Walt, I must disagree with your choice of Eddy for best living guitarist. My choice is Jeff Beck.
And I’m in for ribs, beers and a couple of hoots fer sure. Thanks!!

  7. Patrick,
Beck would be a very second in my book.Perhaps by over all talent only he would come in first but that hairy little Van Halen kid has the talent and personality. Their shows in the 80’s were never disappointing.

    _____________

One of the guys that is coming in for the bbq use to manage a couple of different no name bands in the 70’s and 80’s and he is a hoot to have around for a few days. He can tell you some great (some stories not for the delicate ears) backstage stories. Yes, plenty of Guinness beer to wash down the ribs. YUM!!!

  8. Two of the guys from Deep Purple were at the NAMM show. My hubbie got pix with them and their autographs. Why can’t I remember their names…Glenn Hughes?

My big brother used to hang with Eddie back in the 80’s. Bro is 5 years younger than he is. He had a lot of fun with him (too much).

Its hard to pick a favorite guitarist isn’t it? Becuz of the different styles. If I was forced at gunpoint, I might say Clapton & Albert Lee.

Hey Patrick & any other guitarists here, am looking for opinions. We’re thinking of getting our kid a strat for graduation–humbucker or no humbucker?

  9. His wIfe looks like Sandra Bullock in 10 years with out makeup.

  10. Nance you are right same nose.
Walt I’m coming over for the BBQ.
I hope you live in the West.

  11. Come on Diva! You are more than welcome! Wife (the best wife in the world to put up with my butt all these years!) is making homemade bread too. When she slices it and toasts it (three-four long loaves at a time) it just melts in your mouth.

  12. Georgie my Strat has Lace Gold Sensors. They are a single coil pup. Same ones Clapton and Gilmour use. Humbuckers to my taste are more for Les Pauls. Stevie Ray had humbuckers in the bridge position of his Strat I believe. It’s a personal thing.IMHO Strats are for clean surf like tones which humbuckers don’t do very well.
Spoil him with the Jeff Beck signature Strat.

  13. Eddie was never cute to me and even less so now after all the drinking, drugs and whoring around.

My favorite guitar guru is Eric Clapton since I grew up listening to and loving his music.

  14. Still a bit bloated and rummy for my taste but the boy could play back in the day.

  15. “IMHO Strats are for clean surf like tones which humbuckers don’t do very well.”

Wow. Very well said. I agree and really prefer the single coil for the strat myself. Clapton uses singles in his strats also I think & I like that clear sound.

“Spoil him with the Jeff Beck signature Strat.”

Haha! My son will love you for that. Good taste, but we’ll see! 🙂

Thanks for your advice Patrick! I like to get others opinions before making any kind of important purchase.

  16. There is also the choice of a Telecaster over a Strat, Georgie. More of a one trick pony but a great choice for a learner. Springsteen plays one and his new record is HOT!

  17. Have to jump into the fray, pun intended.

Glad Patrick mentioned Stevie Ray he was always one of my favorites, but frankly, my number one is Jimmy Page.

Patrick, I got Springsteen tickets for later this month. Haven’t heard Wrecking Ball yet but I’m looking forward to it even though it wasn’t with E Street. Will surely miss the Big Man and his saxophone.

  18. Our teen has been playing teles at our local music store, and doing well on them, also SGs. Still he always gravitates back to the strat. We still haven’t decided yet, and have a few months, he graduates in June. Anyway, greatly appreciate the feedback and love the guitar talk. We also love Stevie Ray! And the boss!

  19. If you can survive hitting rock bottom and get your act together for the rest of your life.. yes.. he will be fine.

  20. Denise, good for you it should be a killer concert. If he plays up this way{not announced yet} I know my Mrs. will insist on going.
Georgie, I love all Gibsons and Fenders. Choosing is one of the hardest things there is for a player. They are ALL beautiful.

  21. Thank God he is alright and happy he got married again and wonder if he is going to have any more children in the future.

  22. He must had been depressed or really Bum out in order to let his teeth rot and allow his clothes to go to hell and know he is out of that depression and really happy for his new life.

  23. Van Halen music is still timeless and creating is music is still wonderful and fresh and…He can play his Heart out when it comes down to his music.
