EVEN CREEPY JOAQUIN PHOENIX CAN’T SAVE “THE MASTER”

No WONDER Scientology bigwigs didn’t put up a big stink when they saw an early screening of “The Master.” It’s not likely to be much of a threat to the cult because the movie is SO drawn out and boring. Sure, there are a few similarities to L Ron Hubbard and his followers, but not enough to make it interesting. To make matters worse, the actors (Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix) REALLY ham it up. As weak as the script is, some of the period 1950’s visuals are incredible. Early scenes featuring sleazy photographer Joaquin in a glamorous mid-century department store are ALMOST worth the price of admission. Perfect down to the tiniest detail. But most of the loooong film is painful to watch and a big disappointment.

  1. well, castrating russell brand was a great idea for a movie though.

  2. I think this is the censored version of what horror happened there.. imagine the lives lost and sorrows of many that are and were ignored. In that he repulsed you, made you hate even knowing about what might have been.. Phoenix and Hoffman did this job well..

  3. you are one of the few that has this opinion of this movie…. JP AND PSH are two of the best actors we have now.

  4. No interest whatsoever in a movie even remotely connected to SCI.

I don’t think Joaquin has ever been the same ever since his brother River died in agony of a massive overdose of booze and drugs on the sidewalk in front of the Vapor Room in GollyWeird.

  5. the “ICE” is melting below his feet?

    hahahahahahahahaha.

  6. I’m glad I read this before going out to see this movie.

  7. I agree with one thing-I’ve always found Joaquin to be extremely creepy.

  8. I like Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman and would watch it to see their performances if nothing else.

Still, I think Phoenix and his fellow siblings are a bit different simply because of the way they were raised. I think there are some issues from growing up with the Children of God cult.

  9. I’m really looking forward to Day Lewis in LIncoln.
You’re right Walt. The cult really messed River up.

  10. Me too Patrick. It’s based on Doris Kearns Goodwin’s novel and with Day-Lewis, it can only be spectacular.

  11. I think Daniel Day Lewis is the best actor going right now, Denise. I’ll check out the Lincoln novel.
I’ve been watching Sean Penn in Sweet and Lowdown over and over again on the PVR and am knocked out by the performances in that. Playing guitar like an ace, shooting rats at the dump while drinking beers and watching trains go by. The stuff dreams are made of!
    Excellent Woody Allen period stuff.

  12. The charactors in “The Master” rock!!
But the show its self, ehh… not to good.
If your going to watch I recommend you go out and get you some rocky road ice cream before hand!

ps. This show really suck :/
    bla bla bla

  13. I enjoyed it, it was looonnng and my teenage daughters fell asleep in the movie, but I liked it. I just thought the acting was good and yes Joaquin is strange, he almost always is in the movies except for that movie with Liv Tyler. It was interesting to see how a “religion” can be formed from nonsense.

  14. It’s appropriate time to make some plans for the longer
term and it is time to be happy. I have read this publish and
if I may just I wish to recommend you some fascinating issues or advice.
Maybe you can write next articles regarding this article.
I desire to learn more things about it!
