Comic and retired detective from Law & Order: SVU, Richard Belzer pulled a fast one by breaking the law while having lunch at Nello’s with friends in New York. The TV detective is known for being crazy about his dogs and rarely leaves the house without one of them. He’s active in the North Shore Animal League and always urges fellow actors to adopt dogs rather than buy from a breeder. Above, he appears to have a new pet concealed on his lap in the restaurant and we all know that’s against the law! But we wish it wasn’t.

Actually, having an animal in a restaurant is NOT illegal if the animal is a registered therapy animal.
Seriously Janet, are you having a bad dry spell or something? Your writing has taken a downward turn into petty bitchiness lately that has become quite boring.
Thank goodness the health dept says it’s illegal unless it’s a service animal. There’s the potential for fleas, ticks, poop, pee and all kinds of stuff. Before anyone starts griping I must note my cats sit ON my kitchen table as I eat so I’m not an animal hater by a long shot.
Wonder how Janet feels about breastfeeding in restaurants though?? She has a very clear disdain for children.
There are certain types of people in New York that are above the law. Just look up “WTC 7 free fall” on the internet and you will see.

Most dogs are better behaved than some kids. Here in Portland OR we have many restaurants that welcome dogs in their patio areas. It’s nice to share a meal with friends and pets.
I lived in Europe a long time and I loved taking my dogs with me to restaurants. And these are not small dogs–2 border collies. They would just sit politely under the table. Unless you saw them as we came in or left, you wouldn’t know they were there. As for cleanliness, if you are so delicate that a dog in a restaurant offends you, you shouldn’t look into a restaurant kitchen. You’d never eat out again.
I agree with John. I’m from Europe myself and dogs are always welcomed in restaurants and many other places. Never once did I see a behavioral problem or even a complaint from other customers. Here you can’t even take them to many outdoor locations, like parks and street fairs. So sad and wrong.
