FRAN LEBOWITZ QUOTE “I FIGURE YOU HAVE THE SAME CHANCE OF WINNING THE LOTTERY WHETHER YOU PLAY OR NOT”

For those too young to recognize her- this is the brilliant writer and social commentator Fran Lebowitz. Fran was discovered by Andy Warhol’s Interview magazine and started her career writing a highly entertaining monthly column. At that time we were in the fashion business, but we were SO taken by her style of writing that we decided to give it a try and started writing gossip for movie magazines. Fran was indeed our inspiration, and we made it a point to read everything she wrote. If you haven’t already read her books Metropolitan Life and Social Studies, do it now. Click HERE to read an article she wrote for Vanity Fair.

  1. Who is “we”? If Janet is writing this and not a collective group, then it would be “I” was inspired to write and “I was SO taken by her style of writing.” I never understood what this “we” business is on this site.

  2. I have been a fan of Fran’s for as long as I can remember. A documentary about her is currently available for viewing on HBO.

  3. she is brilliant….. and hilarious in a quirky kinda way…..

  4. Chain smokers are never brilliant or admirable.

  5. I think she has modeled herself after Gertrude Stein, or maybe Alice B. Toklas. In any case, she was one of the few women of the ’70s who didn’t try to hid her lesbianism, and for that, she deserves at least some kudos. Re: her chain smoking, I’m actually surprised she is still alive! 🙂

  6. Who is ‘we’? This seems like an overused idiom.

  7. I appreciate you banning the vacuous remarks of Rex and Kerry. I was getting tired of the pathetically delusional comments of our local racists.

    thanks Janet

  8. Sad about the censorship on this site. Being a reformed Jewish person myself, I have experienced some of the nepotism and cronyism that the posters were referring to. As to the 9/11 comments, many strange and as yet unexplained events had occurred, maybe a new look at these events is warranted.
