Cher’s exhusband Gregg Allman has written a book (“My Cross to Bear”) and judging from what he reveals, he and Cher aren’t that friendly any more. When they met in 1973, The Allman Brothers were a pretty big deal and hard-core heroin addicts, but Cher had barely heard of them. Gregg said Cher had “the filthiest mouth in show business” and his band “didn’t know what to think of her.” He managed to conceal his drug use until after they were married (SHE proposed and flew him to Las Vegas.) He hated the fact that whenever they wanted to go out for a quiet dinner there would be 35 photographers waiting for them outside the restaurant. (He implied that SHE alerted them.) The last straw about their relationship was about the music – Allman was glad Cher never asked him what he thought of her singing because “she’s NOT a very good singer.”

As for the singing bit, I think even Cher knows her singing sucks. She’s an entertainer, not a singer.

Keep in mind that that was the mid 70’s and most of America would be shocked hearing ANY woman cuss very much. Chances are she cussed much less than he or his band mates but it was more memorable to them because she was a woman.
Muffie, your right again kid. Cher knows her singing limits. She is an entertainer. She may not be a great singer but she always puts on a cool show. I still love her music.

All of Greg Allman’s failings aside, and he has many, the Allman Brothers Band was and remains one of my all time favorites.

Walt, that is so true re the swearing! I listen to kids talk today and every other word is the F word, including the girls. Why do we never hear about the son these two had, I think he was on the weird side also.
Cher was ahead of her time and she is a VERY good singer! I have been to several of her concerts and she had a very beautiful and rich voice. Screw the haters! Cher was always the original pop star and she sings damned good!
Gregg’s rampant drug abuse has obvs clouded his memory. He told an interviewer years ago that Cher was his dream women before they even met. Btw…Cher was pregnant when tey eloped 7 days after her divorce was final frm Sonny. Do you really think she wanted to get married again?!! She did it because of the baby (which wasnt Elijah). He left Cher for over 24 hrs scoring heroin in their honeymoon. Thats when she left Jamaica and flew home and filed for divorce and terminated the pregnancy. Cut 3 months ahead and Cher drops the divorce when Gregg intered rehab and bam!! She gets preggers again. Thats when she decided she couldnt ever go through another abortion and has said in many interviews that some children just want to be born.
Btw…Ive never known why people think Gregg has this amazing voice. Its average at best.

Cher has the WOW factor, that is why she has had such a long, successful career.
I saw Cher at the Cow Palace(opener w/Sonny) for the Beatles. Then a year or two later at the Circle Star which was a smaller venue.She is a great entertainer and as a 12/13 young kid I was just in awe of her. I have always enjoyed her singing and acting but most of all her free spirit. Nothing beats her Turn Back time video!

Not quite sure why Cher was so stuck on this guy? It always seemed pretty one sided. I think his big love at the time was substance. The only thing I can come up with, is that he was the complete opposite of Sonny. Also, Sonny kept her mouth in check. She just went nuts when she finally dumped Sonny. Smoking, swearing, marrying heroin addicts. Everything Sonny would be against.
Even Sonny (who had a much longer, probably more complex relationship with Cher), didn’t take these types of shots in his book. He said some things, but I heard at the time, that he had many things edited out. Sonny said he couldn’t bring himself to treat the “mother of his child” so harshly. I also remember him stating that he really didn’t give a crap if Cher was with Gregg or not, but he did think they were an “odd couple”.

Cher has a voice that really grows on you and to hear her special style and the way she is singing the song..is like telling a story and love her beautiful long legs and her long black hair and always liked her from day one but as far as her ex husband he kept her in the dark because he loved her and wanted to share his life with her and knew if he was straight up and honest about his use of drugs…She would had said no and he would be by himself and love is love and wanting some one is really wanting some one and of course singing is singing and everyone has there own flavor and style and two people getting together and blending each other life together is a reason people get married and the fact you want to put that person on lock down and that way..They can be your only lover!
