JOAQUIN PHOENIX THINKS HE’S SMARTER THAN HIS AUDIENCE

Apparently Joaquin Phoenix never got to play the role he wanted – that of an unwashed ungrateful slob – so creating the mockumentary “I’m Still Here” appealed to him. Phoenix and filmmaker Casey Affleck hope to pass it off as a documentary but it seems way too contrived and self indulgent. In the film, Joaquin, who was so brilliant in “Walk the Line,” decided he hated acting and quit Hollywood to become a hip hop performer. Along the way he stopped bathing, grew hair in all directions and behaved like a drug addict. The whole concept is absurd. Joaquin has since taken a bath and his agents are actively pursing film roles for him and have several on the table. If there’s a joke here – it’s on anyone who buys a ticket to this movie.

  1. I think he is still grieving over the violent death of his brother River Phoenix, who died outside the Viper Club writhing in pain from a massive drug/alcohol overdose about 8 or 9 years ago. This may have made him into the strange character he has slowly morphed in to.

  2. JOAQUIN Phoenix and CASEY Affleck?

Sounds like an episode of Entourage.

  3. River died 17 years ago, but there was plenty else to screw with Joaquin’s head. Although his parents left the Children of God cult within 4 years of his birth, I am pretty sure there were residual effects in their hippy dippy parenting style. On the other hand, he’s 36 years old now. How old was Oprah when she started to turn around her disfunctional behaviour after childhood trauma?

  4. He’s so stupid. When you write on your knuckles, most people read left to right dipshit. Next time try and think ahead.

  5. He’s an actor playing a role and he did a damn good job convincing people that he’s gone downhill. It’s an mockumentary, indy film not a big-budget movie. I give him credit for stepping away from his usual roles and doing something different.

  6. Right, I think he did that on purpose for the film. Casey Affleck said the whole time Phoenix was in character.

  7. They’re both morons. You’re an actor Joaquin, get over yourself. You can be easily replaced by 100 other actors currently employed as waiters. If being a Hollywood star is such a godawful life then go get a job as a waiter to give you a dose of reality you ungrateful slob.

  8. BTW Indy, River’s death was closer to twenty years ago – it was in the mid-nineties.

  9. Leave Joaquin alone – All of the people who posted are just upset they didn’t think up what Casey and Joaquin did.
And even though it has been 17+ years since River passed on, YOU never get over the loss of an brother, sister, Mother or Father….

  10. River`s death was in 1993,so it is eighteen years ago….
As for Joaquin,it is all so unfortunate the path he has taken of lately…He is a very good actor, especially in Walk the Line!As far as I was concerned,I felt Joaquin should have won the Oscar for his performance in that movie, just as I also feel that is when he snapped….He was so disappointed as others were that he said F–K you`s….and left doing movies to become a freak rapper…
Yes that whole family lived quite the live indeed….But personally I feel it was the slap in the face he took that did it for him!
Who know`s…I just wish him the best for the future….

  11. Jadeleelynn, I think you raise an interesting point that was only touched on by a couple of other posts.

The Phoenix boys were raised in a hippie environment, and were taught to have integrity, and to value true art. Joaquin really deserved an oscar for his performance, and maybe his not getting it was the turning point for him – when he realized how crapy and superficial Hollywood is – causing him to derail. Other actors have had similar experiences (Mickey Rourke comes first to mind). If that is the case, I hope he finds an answer to it all, one he can live with.

  12. I met Joaquin when he filmed Walk the Line, here in my Hometown, and I have to say he was open, natural, friendly, and rational when we had a long conversation. He was excellent in that movie, BTW, and is a wonderful Method actor. Thats the thing, he’s a METHOD ACTOR, and this latest project he’s working on should be interesting. We see him totally immersed IN CHARACTER, and we have yet to see the finished product. It’s like the blind man feeling the elephant, we can only catch a glimpse until we see it all put together. The best actors are usually Method actors, and I don’t presume to judge the way they prepare for a role, just as I can’t presume on how to tell a doctor how to perform surgery, or a writer how to research a novel. Give him the benefit of a doubt folks.

  13. Sebasitian Canada yes I think you are right with your comments….mind you your comments are always pretty much level headed to begin with:)
I know that the 2006 Oscar awards was a disapponting for many and very much disappointing to myself,so just imagine what that did to him, especially mentally!
I mean believe it or not he sang Johnny songs better then Johnny himself…And I enjoy some of Johnny`s songs!
The whole family is quite talented, right down to his sisters….
I just hope he pull`s himself together:)

  14. Thanks Guy……. I also think he sang JC’s Songs better than the Man himself, and I love Johnny Cash. Considering all he has gone through with his upbringing and his brother’s death, the instability and shallowness of the Hollywood lifestyle, and the pressure staying relevant in a fickle industry, I’d be more than half crazy myself…. However, I do so admire those who have that “Otherness”, the talent, the brilliance, and the quirckiness that makes for a wonderfully eccentric personality. Same old, safe and predictable are so flatline personality. Do you agree? I have been reading your posts for a long time now, and somehow think you may.

  15. Jadeleelynn,

it is so funny, a friend was obsessed with the whole Johnny Cash performance, and the injustice of Phoenix being snubbed, while Witherspoon walked off with an oscar. One just had to mention Walk the Line, and this guy would give a speech pretty close to your last post.

And for anyone who has not seen that movie, when someone goes on about it, as my friend did, you go “Yeah, yeah. Whatever.”, but when you see the movie you get it.

  16. Maybe the parents were really sensitive and artistic, but for one child to die from a drug overdose, and another to go off the deep end when an award didn’t come through, suggests a lack of centeredness, strength, and confidence in oneself. That’s the same as ef’d up parenting.
Joaquin was fantastic in Walk the Line, no doubt. He’s not 50 yet, so there’s hope he’ll pull himself together.

  17. I’m so fed up with his self indulgent, self-destructive, bent, and that he would drag his brother-in-law Casey Affleck down with him is disgusting. Casey was/is not exactly a huge star to begin with, but this horrific mess (I’ve been reading many detailed reviews) may cement his career along with Joaquin’s. That the two of them thought for one second that this stupid idea was brilliant is mind boggling. I saw the original David Letterman interview as it happened and Dave wiped the floor with the moron. Joaquin was a total ass and shouldn’t even have come on if that was his plan. It was neither funny nor entertaining. Irritating like a mosquito that won’t leave you alone and keeps buzzing back again. I wanted Dave to just smack his mouth off the first time he opened it, with that rumpled suit and the gross bedhead and filthy beard, let alone the chewing gum stuck under Dave’s desk edge!
Now, in this “movie” ther is a person taking a shit on another person. OH YE-AH…THAT’S good moviemaking! I hope Joaquin goes far far away with his failed joke and sel-centered idiocy, and learns to really write some good material. But I will never spend another cent on his crap, he’s shit on me for the last time!

  18. Listen to these sycophants making excuses for the poor oppressed $2 million dollar a pic actor. Why don’t you just face the fact that he’s a self indulgent ASSHOLE and save your pity for people starving in third world countries or your neighbor who just lost their home? Get your priorities straight!

  19. My only words is good actor and don’t know much about him other than that.

  20. D. Actor, I for one am not necessarily making excuses. Your point is valid, but at least people like Phoenix care, or at least make a pretense of caring, about doing good work and demonstrating integrity.

It is all relative, and when you look at people like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie – who make crap movies, take the money and run, and then act like they are great and noble artistes – you gotta cut Joaquin some slack.

  21. I’m not cutting him ANY “slack” Sebastian. Have you read ANY of the reviews? Try a few of the major ones, I suggest Roger Eberts for a start. This piece of crap self-indulgent year of following Phoenix around while he plays “crazy”is not only a waste of film and money, but two talented actors. I’ve got better things to do with MY time and money than to indulge his uncreative and rediculously disgusting and stupid attempt to fool the public into thinking he was imploding and they were voyeurs on the edge of their seats with a front row picture. Stupid isn’t the word.

  22. JP is a a talented actor and I’m a fan of his but I have no intention of seeing this film.
This project stinks of something the Affected Afflecks (Casey and Ben) would think of,. Prior to this mockumentary I have never heard anyone say Joaquin Phoenix was not a down to earth and approachable guy.
I hope this project does not sabotage JP’s career.
Most actors, do NOT work as actors.
Most people who want to have as a career as an actor do not make and not for lack of talent.
Lack of opportunity is the main treason why actors are working in restaurants and bars.
“”Actors” who make it should remember this and offer gratitide for the opportunities they have been given to do something they love AND make a good living from.
It must be hard to live in the public eye but one must take the good with the bad and stop friggin whining.

  23. Someone is paying JC bucks to keep this less than timely post at the top of the board so long.

  24. anonTWO, I agree. Actually much of what you wrote applies to not just actors. Life is rarely fair, and one should appreciate being given a break, and not assume that it is reward for being so wonderful, or payback for previous pain and trauma.

Assuming he undstands all this, Phoenix has to be given credit for being willing to take a risk with the fame and success that was given to him. This whole thing could blow up in his face, and set him permanently in the D-list.

  25. ^^^i hope that it becomes moderated. so that monologues and things that has nothing to do with the posted stories get deleted.

JOAQUIN THROWS HIMSELF INTO A ROLE AND HAS MASSIVE PASSION FOR THE PAIN AND FEELINGS OF THE PERSON HE IS PLAYING AND HE LIKES TO PUT HIS MONEY WHERE HIS MOUTH IS AND CAN REALLY HIT IT OUT OF THE BALL PARK AND HE HAS HIS REASONS FOR DOING WHAT HE DOES AND IT IS GOOD ENOUGH FOR HIM AND IT WORKS WELL FOR HIM AND HE IS THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERS AND IT IS HIS LIFE AND HE CAN DO ANYTHING WITH IN THE LAW THAT HE DAM WELL PLEASE AND HE WAS PUT ON THIS EARTH TO DO WHAT EVER HE WANTS AND SO FAR…FROM WHAT I HAVE SEEN IS AMAZING AND FANTASTIC AND INCREDIBLE WORK.

I REALLY LIKED HIM IN WALK THE LINE AND WISH THERE WAS A PART TWO TO THAT STORY LINE AND IT WOULD BE NICE TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS DOWN THE ROAD BUT THEY CAN’T AFFORD TO DO THAT AGAIN DOWN THE ROAD..AND ALL THOSE ACTORS ARE INTO OTHER THING AND THEY ARE ROCKING IT OUT ALL OVER THE WORLD AND YES JOANQUIN IS HIS OWN MAN AND HAS EMOTIONS AND FEELINGS AND THOUHGTS.

  34. Some one who will not bath or take a bath has to stand away me…I GET SICK AND WANT TO TOSS MY COOKIES AND OF COURSE RESEARCH OKAY GROSS…Money is great and that is a good reason but how do people get carried away and some people like there natural smell but that would really turn me off completely..No matter how sexy a person is the smell would kill the sexy-ness of the man! Too bad he is willing to smell like a homeless person..All those good looks what a waste of life.
