JOHN CUSACK DOES NOT RESEMBLE HIS CHARACTER IN GRACE IS GONE

It’s amazing how old and plain a tan windbreaker can make a cute guy look. In Grace is Gone, John Cusack,41, plays a middle aged father with a dead end job and a defeated attitude. The hunched actor looks much shorter than his 6′3″ height and he’s very convincing as a mature and pathetic character. People in the audience are startled by how much older Cusack seems to have gotten since his last movie. We’re happy to report that he hasn’t aged overnight – he’s ACTING. He made a personal appearance at a SAG screening of the movie last week, looking cool, dressed in black, and proved that he’s still an appealing, if unconventional, leading man. We think he’s doing a lot of these public appearances to show that he’s not as old as he looks in the movie.

Bottom Line: A disappointing and manipulative look at one family’s loss in the Iraq war. The Hollywood Reporter.
“Grace Is Gone” is not a dishonest film for you sense the fledgling filmmaker’s sincere desire to deal with grief, the natural outcome of war. But the grief in writer-director James C. Strouse’s “Grace” is so heavily manufactured that everything rings hollow. In John Cusack, Strouse has one of the screen’s more versatile leading men. Yet Cusack seems strangely remote in a surprisingly one-note performance that requires the audience to supply the emotions.
From the sounds of sniffles in the Eccles Theater here, many will do just that. Much of these feelings owes to the highly manipulative use of two very young actors who play Cusack’s adolescent daughters. The eldest, Shelan O’Keefe, is the best thing about the movie. But the younger one, Grace Bednarczyk, is Strouse’s go-to person when he needs a quick emotional jolt.
