Ever since we heard that Johnny Depp is playing Tonto in Jerry Bruckheimer’s 2012 version of “The Lone Ranger,” we confess we’ve been drooling at the prospect. We thought no one could ever fill the moccasins of Jay Silverheels – our childhood crush – but Johnny is as good as it gets. Depp, you’ll recall, has a Cherokee grandmother, and both he and Jay were from Canada. This certainly increases the importance of the loyal kemo-sabe, leaving one to wonder who will be cast as The Lone Ranger. George Clooney was under consideration a few years ago, but considering the necessary athleticism, seems unlikely. Any ideas?

The constant remakes indicate that Hollywood is out of fresh ideas. Although I’d watch Johnny Depp stand in a corner so I’d see this. And if George Clooney needs to be tested for athleticism, give me a call.
There was a time when johnny depp was supposed to play freddie mercury. Would have done a good job yes? no?
I am sure there is a great deal of old material that would warrant a remake or movie treatment, but some of the stuff already done, or in the works? What do they do, pick these ideas out of the hat?
Yeah, one remake after another. Lack of fresh scripts or nostalgia? The days of glory are NOT coming back, let’s relive them on silver screen while making few bucks on it.
Depp is cool, but in no way can fill the fringy swede shirt of Jay Silverheels. What’s wrong with actually getting an authentic American Indian who resembles him to do the job? They could do open casting calls at the Calif casinos. But that Jay Silverheels I think is irreplacable so they might as well give up, and who even cares about the Lone Ranger?
They could do casting calls in NM, SD, MT and Arizona at the welfare offices and find all the Indians they need for….a cast of thousands!
Sal, no doubt that issue is going to come to the fore sooner or later. Mind you, I am sure that Depp, like many a white American, can trot out that old “I am one sixteenth Cherokee” line.
Depp should only be in a movie that requires him to wear an eye patch (aaargh). And that series is terribly boring. avast, matey.

I think Johnny is perfect for Tonto. For the Lone Ranger…I don’t know.
Look at the picture on the left, now look at the picture on the right…pause…now take a second or two to realise there is absolutely NO comparison in what these men offer. Jay Silverheels IS Tonto!
