MARILYN MONROE AND JOE DIMAGGIO IN THEIR COURTING DAYS

Just when you thought you’ve seen every photo ever taken of Marilyn Monroe, along comes another book of exclusive pictures. It’s called Marilyn: August 1953 and the pictures were all taken for Look magazine while 27 year old Marilyn was filming “The River of No Return” with Robert Mitchum and Rory Calhoun in Alberta, Canada. Baseball hero Joe DiMaggio visited her on location and Marilyn looks sweet and a little shy in their photo. They got married the following year.

  1. Monroe was a sweet person with many problems, and a great actress, but let’s face it, her adult life was one train-pulling session. Feel sorry for Joe, he thought is was love, poor boy.

  2. Supposedly Marilyn told her friends that he was her one true love. He certainly felt the same and always had her grave filled with fresh flowers up until he died. It’s too bad he let his nearly puritanical sexual beliefs ruin what they had. He dumped her after the great scene where the subway grate wind blows her skirt up. She had on thin panties that left nothing to the imagination and there were too many gawkers on the set for Joe to stand it. They redid the scene with her wearing several layers of white panties, but the damage had been done, and she had innocently shown “his” business to everybody and relished doing so. I read he left her the next day over it. You’d think she had screwed the whole production team by the way he overreacted! After all, She WAS a famous actress when he married her. But he wanted her to retire also and be a regular housewife. AS IF!!!! He was lucky enough to get her as long as he did!!!

  3. This is no newly discovered photo of Joe and Marilyn. I have seen this before, in one of those biography books about Marilyn (I forget the title, but it’s on my shelf). Hopefully the other 26 pictures really are “exclusive.”

  4. Reta, I think those incidents just triggered DiMaggio’s suspicions – the subtext to Joe and Marilyn’s relationship is in BOLD CAPS.

My impression is that the story that Joe was so obsessive and puritanical developed, or at least grew to mythic proportions, after the sexual-revolution of the 60’s/70’s.

  5. He may have tried to be a regular Joe, but she was still Marilyn Monroe. A wife at home wearing furry slippers was not in the cards for her. Even during her stint singing
“Happy Birthday Mr. President” to JFK, she was “the sex symbol”.

  6. Leo, yes, you’re right andd she was nude under that dress and had to be sewn into it before she went onstage. After she sang and everybody returned to the White House marlyn had to remain standing because her dress was too tight to allow her to sit.

Joe had no business being on her set to begin with, espiecially with his temperament. She knew he was a jealous type, and perhaps took a bit of delight in pushing his buttons to prove how valuable she was to him. But she underestimated him and his jealousy. Having her nearly nude crotch shot filmed for everybody to see made him nuts and as a “man’s man” he just couldn’t face other men after that, knowing they would tease him about what “his wife” had done. It was another time and place and men really felt they had a control over their women’s bodies and what they should do with them. That he didn’t think it thru before they married is what puzzles me!

  7. We all know that she had no problem with nudity and he was a stiff, by the way strom, he was Italian don’t you have anything against the the Italians? Sorry they are white.

  8. Joe was a class act, as even were the black baseballer’s of that era. Fame and enablers have changed things.

  9. Lenny, I think in Strom’s book Italians, Greeks and Portuguese are not white ; )

  10. Interesting backstory about Joe DiMaggio being on set and being upset by that scene, especially because it is so iconic.

  11. My stepsisters grandmother was friends with Judy DiMaggio, Joe’s sister. She (Judy) told Dorothy that her whold family hated Marilyn Monroe and always referred to her as “that slut.” Sad.

  12. Yep, at 27 she had been giving up her pretty wide ass for many years and had been married and divorced…..I think both Rory and Wild Bob Mitchum were pumping her during the filming of that movie….Joe was no saint either and was known for boning many a New York Rockette after hours!

  13. In my humble but correct opinion, the two prettiest faces in all of Hollywood were Marilyn Monroe and Vivien Leigh (Gone with the wind).

Will these murders ever be solved?:

    Who murdered JonBenet Ramsey.
    Who murdered M.M.

  14. The whole DiMaggio-Monroe romance thing is largely about people being nostalgic about the good ol’ days, but there really were none. The history of Hollywood is littered with rapes, pedophilia, sexual perversions, abortions and substance abuse, and the rest of the world is not much better.

Love it when people act and talk as if immorality, corruption and perversion were invented a year ago last Tuesday.

  15. From what I’ve read about Marilyn Monroe, she wanted to be a house-wife, and yet she was just too ambitious and there was always another picture to be made. Joe DiMaggio was jealous of her. In public, she garnered more attention than he did, and he couldn’t stand it. Even on their honeymoon to Korea, Marilyn made a point to use her trip there to entertain the troops and that made DiMaggio angry. I think he was a small-minded, ego-centric, male chauvenist who couldn’t let his wife shine in her own right.

  16. Marilyn had abandonment issues, which made her a fame whore – she was never going to give up the limelight because even the levels of fame and adoration she had at her peak did not fill the hole in her soul.

She may have said she wanted to be a housewife, she may have thought she wanted to be one, but it would have been Hell to her.

  17. The book “My Story” explains her human condition. Marilyn Monroe gave birth to six children out of wedlock. She believed in life;first born son, John Burton, Janet Raymond, Nancy Miracle, Barbara Monroe, and Patricia Paradise. Sebastian aka Guy O’Donnell , you’re a devil, You and Anthony Sommers can go straight to hell.

  18. Guy O’Donnell aka Strom, Jeannified, you’re a liar, a slanderer and a devil. God hates you. You antichrist.
