If Malawi officials really stick to their guns and refuse to allow Madonna to adopt Mercy James, it’s really a travesty and a crime against the little girl. (Mercy, above, is holding hands with Lourdes.) The welfare of this child should be considered first and bureaucracy and prejudices set aside. What chance does this child in an orphanage have if she remains in the poorest country in South Africa? It’s an AIDS ridden place where women have few rights, are routinely beaten by their husbands, and their life expectancy is 38. Regardless of what one thinks of Madonna, her children are well taken care of and educated. Give Mercy a chance for a life.

Madonna has not fulfilled the residency requirement for adoption. Why should she be able to get preferential treatment a SECOND time – or is it truly that those who have enough money can get what they want every time?
The laws in Malawi, regarding adoption, are there for a reason. The laws are for EVERYONE, including Madonna. They cannot bypass the laws for a person because they are affluent, and or famous. You’re not looking at the bigger picture. She was very, very lucky to have been able to adopt her Son. I feel for Mercy and all the children in the orphanage, but with all due respect to you and the $$$$ you’ve been paid by Madonna for this post (probably) Politics and Procedure are very, very, very important to ensure the future well being of ALL THOSE CHILDREN. Get educated before you spout off some BS for Madonna. Any NORMAL GOOD PARENT who would devote 100% of her time to being a mother would be confronted with these same rules. Why shouldn’t her majesty? Double standards need to be eliminated, and so does actual parental fitness.

Mercy is considered a disgrace by her mother’s family. Her uncles want her out of the family and out of Malawi, they both signed the paperwork for Madonna to adopt her, they do not want her and will not have her back in the family, she is doomed to reside in an orphanage. Her grandmother sent her to the orphanage, the same grandmother who sent Mercy’s pregnant teenage mother to work in the fields as a family disgrace. Madonna has met the requirements and found by Malawi to be a good mother for David, even the Judge agreed to that and to the fact that the best interests of Mercy would be adoption by Madonna. Malawi has over 1 million kids made orphans by AIDS. None of those protesting the adoption have come forward and adopted a child. The alleged father who just emerged days ago has never seen the child nor cared if she was alive or dead. This child deserves a family who loves her and a chance for an education and good health. Malawi law has made other exceptions in residency for adoptions before. The Judge just does not like Madonna and that is tragic for the child.

Malawi is not “the poorest country in South Africa”! Try Zimbabwe, where inflation is at 11.2 MILLION percent, 90% of the people are unemployed and the store shelves are simply BARE. Do your homework before you post this stuff, Janet!

For all the grodiness that is Madonna, she does seem to be a great mother. She’s able to separate her alley cat ways from motherhood somehow. If she’s willing and able to give an orphan a better life, I say give her the chance.

You sound seriously dumb! Firstly Malawi is not the poorest country in SouthERN Africa, I think that title goes straight to Zimbabwe. Secondly do you realise that South Africa is an actual country (at the tip of Africa) and not a region, the region is Southern Africa!?

Uhm, neither Zimbabwe nor Malawi are poor countries in South Africa. They are poor countries in southern Africa. South Africa is the southern most country on the continent of Africa. Excuse me for saying this, but it seems that Americans really do not even have the most basic knowledge of geography.

the point the Malawi government is making is that if they break the existing law for Madonna, they will set a precedent that could allow any type of pedophile or child trafficking into the country. Madonna should at least respect this and how it relates to the children of Malawi.
She is also well within her rights(and payscale) to support Mercy financially from afar or to live in Malawi for the 18 months that is required. She doesn’t want to live there and as far as I know not supporting her. She is using the press to get what she wants without any thought to the other children she is putting at risk. In short she is not used to hearing the word no, and isn’t taking kindly to it. Tough.
