We never knew that Michael Jackson was a big fan of Freddie Mercury’s. Back in the early 80’s Jackson used to go to all the Queen concerts at the Forum in LA and he went backstage and became friendly with Mercury. They went out to dinner a few times and then Freddie said that Michael just stopped going out. He said he had everything he wanted at home and didn’t have to leave the house. My feeling would be that the OUT Freddie may have come on to the sexually underaged MJ who was stuck in his preteen years forever. Maybe he didn’t want Freddie or his other friends to find out his true attraction, to young males who had not yet gone thru puberty. I don’t think Freddie or any adult people would get on board with that if they knew the truth.

Freddie didn’t die because of HIV. He died because of his drug use that ravaged his immune system. But, being that both were gay, it’s not hard to believe the two experimented with each other. Michael probably realized that his sexuality, should it become public, would harm him. Thus, that’s why he ended up staying home so he could practice in private.
Staying home is isolating, and speaks of emotional difficulties, and insecurities.
Freddie Mercury was a fabulous voice of rock ‘n roll, forever silenced.
I have been to hundreds of concerts and Queen never let me down. What a show!! They were definitely a great band and what incredible vocals from buck-toothed Mercury. I’ve read several places years and years ago that Mercury wouldn’t have them fixed because he was afraid it would have an affect on his sound.
It was all that hard to determine that Mercury was gay. I don’t believe for a second that he and Jackson ever had any kind of physical relationship. With that said, I wouldn’t have been surprised if Mercury might have put the “moves” on Jackson. I enjoy both of their music but my gut tells me that Jackson preferred younger males than himself. I don’t believe Jackson ever slept with an adult male or female in a sexually way.

For a column about gossip, it seems “queer” to me that there are supposedly macho guys here insulting gay people. I wonder when they are alone in the closet they dwell on what everyone pictured in this column is wearing. I bet Strom salivated over Chloe’s FABULOUS dress. And I am getting the impression there is the perception if two gay people are seen together they must be screwing. After all, isn’t that what heteros always do?

Freddie was a wonderful singer but he died of AIDS, no question. Probably he blew Michael and it freaked him out. Michael prefered doing that himself to young boys. He should be in prison today instead of in a tomb.

I never saw a Jackson{yeah, riiight!} concert but I saw Queen around 1979 and they were not very good live. Not after seeing some of the other Brit bands I idolized at the time showed me how it was supposed to be laid down for the fans. YES in the round was amazing. Genesis doing Wind and Wuthering for four buck a ticket playing at center ice in the Coliseum was stunning. Even Rush our Canadian hard rock band was very good live. Roxy music and King Crimson were very good but Queen was just o.k.
The best Queen song live was “I’m in love with my car.” “Tie your mother down,” was good too.
The WHO sucked live.

Another beefI have is with modern concert sound systems. They all sound the same and have the same audio for all bands. There are no more individual sound systems for the band which to my opinion was one of the interesting aspects of live performance back in the day. Every band had a different sonic signature live. Some way better than others. Grateful Dead, Pink Floyd, The KinKs, Ramones, Stones, especially Yes and Genesis and evev Elvis were pioneers of quality live sound.
Now all live touring acts have the same generic{boom} sound.
It is really sad.

@ Patrick, all those bands you idolized clearly have very different musical styles and performance ethos apart from Queen. The 2 songs you name are also just a drop in the bucket of VAST amount of different styles Queen tackled. Might those be the reasons why you just didn’t enjoy them, on their own terms?
