MICHAEL JACKSON: THE JHERI CURL BURNED HIS SCALP IN THAT PEPSI AD

A friend who just happened to work on the 1984 Pepsi commercial where Michael Jackson had his scalp burned filled us in on what REALLY occurred that night at the Shrine Auditorium. Michael Jackson spent his off-camera time watching “Three Stooges” movies in his dressing room. When the big scene with the pryrotechnics was being set up, Michael was reminded NOT to use the greasy Jheri Curl solution he wore in his hair. They were afraid it might be flammable. Even in those days Michael did what HE wanted – he paid no attention and used the Jheri Curl product as usual. During the first take Michael made his entrance a bit too quickly and the fireworks weren’t so spectacular behind him. For the second (and ultimately final) take Michael was advised to enter slowly and the fireworks were beefed up. It was during the second take that sparks ignited Michael’s Jheri Curl and seriously burned his scalp. And ONLY his scalp – the rest of him was okay. The source believes that if Michael hadn’t used the Jheri Curl he would not have burned. Funny how life happens.

  1. I don’t get how that’s funny. As with many of your posts about African Americans, Janet, I find your comments reflect a provincial white woman way who is way past her prime when it comes to celebrity gossip blogging.

  2. As usual, Janet gets it wrong. There was a total of SIX takes, not two. And it was on the sixth and final take that his hair caught on fire. Way to go, Janet, Not.

Etienne, I got this info from someone I know who worked on the video and eyewitnessed the event. It’s accurate. Your source is mistaken.
    Janet

  3. I’ll bet that’s when his painkiller addiction started. He probably popped those pills and, for the first time in his life, felt what it must be like to live without constant stress. No going back…

  4. this is old news. when it happened the news reported that all the crap on his hair caught fire

  5. This was a fresh tidbit, but I’d prefer to read the big juicy celebrity gossip.

  6. That’s what will happen with a bunch a greasy crap and fire in close proximity……
DU-UH!!!! I din’t think Micheal was the brightest bulb in the drawer to not realise this simple fact of nature!

  7. janet your posts about african americans seem a little tinged with racism.

  8. Did they tell him *why* he shouldn’t put the Jheri curl in his hair? I can’t imagine he would be stupid enough to take that kind of risk if he had understood it — there are some people who like to boss people around and deliberately *don’t* warn them exactly when it would be most crucial, because that is how people like that feel in control (pathetic, I know) Also, hairspray would have been just as dangerous, did they warn him about that, too?

  9. Accidents happen
I agree his drug addiction started
with the pain his scalp received.
