NEW YORK DOLLS: TOO MUCH TOO SOON?

Love this early 70’s photo of New York Dolls Johnny Thunders and David Johansen lounging around the Village. We remember seeing the Dolls at Max’s Kansas City almost every night, staggering around in their high heels. In those days it was unusual – and fabulous- to see apparently hetero men in makeup and women’s clothing. Max’s was SO hot back then, that if we were on a flight arriving in New York in the evening, we bypassed checking into a hotel and taxied straight to Max’s, where the bartender kindly stuck our suitcase behind the bar until the place closed. We couldn’t bear to miss a minute of the action.

  1. ………..today’s F*ggots only differ in the way they dress.

  2. Loved Max’s KC and CBGB’s. Went in the mid 70’s when Blondie and Tom Petty played. Good times indeed.
