Animal activist Richard Belzer, who promotes the adoption of homeless pets and has adopted two dogs of his own, has been accused of being an irresponsible dog owner. His female border collie mix Django was not spayed and according to sources in animal activism, he allowed her to mate with another dog in Central Park. She gave birth to eight puppies recently and now he has to scramble to find homes for them. Keep in mind that thousands of shelter dogs are killed every year because they cannot find homes. His fellow animal lovers are calling the “Law & Order” star a hypocrite and WORSE…
He AND that other dog owner are irresponsible! Not only does spaying and neutering cut down on unwanted puppies and kittens, it is also better for the health of dogs and cats. Non-neutered and non-spayed dogs and cats are subject to various cancers. This guys is a PUTZ.
Yeah even Peta kills the dogs that are given to them because they don’t want to SPEND the Millions they receive, on caring for them. They’d rather use some of that change on picket signs and t-shirts.
Someone take up a collection and buy this guy a leash to keep his dog under control. Jeez!

He should have had his dog spayed, like every intelligent, educated person does. This is really white trash behavior. Each dog he must scramble to find homes for is taking away a second chance at life for a dog in the shelter.

I heard North Shore Animal League is severing all ties to him over this PR fiasco. They work very hard bringing America’s attention to the plight of homeless animals and the importance of spaying and neutering your pets to combat the crisis of pet overpopulation.
There simply are not enough homes for all the dogs who are killed. Having a litter right now during this time of hardship, when so many people are being forced to give up their animals is plain wrong. The shelters are full. He should know better.

He bought the Octomom dog it is not adopted he only has one rescued dog, he needs to go to the bump room at the shelter immediately and see what his stupid actions cause.
In an era where advocacy for animals is under the scrutiny of every person out there, for Belzer to do something like this is a damaging blow to the credibility of true animal advocates and rescue groups everywhere. 8 puppies… let’s do the math, if there are 4 dogs euthanized for every one dog born, there are 32 dogs that are dead. Congrats! Are you going to be in a shelter when one of those pups are put down, or maybe all of them? No… you will continue to be an utter disappointment to not only the people that once counted you as an ally, but also to the dogs that you have needlessly brought into this world, and the ones that left it prematurely.

Geez people. I am an advocate of suicide prevention…of people staying alive. No one gets themelves into an uproar that every 16 minutes a person takes his/her own life. Let’s get some perspective here. Animals are so wonderful and deserve our attention, but please focus for a moment on mental illness and people who are suffering. Be kind to people! Richard Belzer and his wife need to know that by not spaying their dog and allowing her to have a litter of 8 puppies, they just signed the death sentence for 8 rescue dogs who are sitting in cages in shelters right now, and who will be taken to the gas chamber tomorrow. Having met Richard at our Posh Puppy protest, and hearing him explain to the public on the video we made that day, that adoption is the way to go, I”m dumbfounded as to why he and his wife did this. I hope after reading all these comments they will try to remedy the situation in some way, although I don’t know how that can be done. Maybe he can publicly acknowledge that they made a bad decision and to discourage people from following their terrible example.
I am an animal rights person but what I really hate is the automatic attacking and denigrating of people without knowing the entire story. Maybe his dog can’t tolerate anesthesia or some other reason for not having been spayed. Maybe he is usually a very responsible owner who was unaware the dog was in heat due to a silent heat which can often happen. while I am dismayed that there are yet more pups to find homes for, I am much more dismayed at the disgusting attitude that people are spewing towards a very vocal advocate for adoption. This is why I am not a member of PETA (but I support the HSUS).. most members are far too fundamental in thought and too quick to inflict character damage.

Even if the dog couldn’t tolerate an operation, have you ever heard of a leash? If you are an “animal rights person” as you say you are, then why are you defending having pups and not spaying or neutering? Maybe you should read some of the HSUS (you support them, right?) reading materials, brochures, web site, etc. Or maybe you are having a silent heat yourself and can’t think straight.

I also understand and respect that there are people who are actually responsible intact dog owners. If he didn’t know the dog was in heat then he wouldn’t have to be concerned about the leash. But as we don’t know the true story and this is all hearsay, I choose not to denigrate someone who speaks out and gives his time for animals. It isn’t against the law to not s/n and the last I checked this was still a choice in this country. You’re are a fundamentalist and I don’t support fundamentalists of any kind.
Belzer has been a great proponent of adoption and shelter animals. I would like to hear his side before crucifying him. Like BETHNYC said, perhaps there is a reason the dog was not spayed/neutered.
And fyi, dogs are allowed off-leash in Central Park before 9am and after 8pm so he was doing nothing wrong there.
As one who fosters homeless animals, it is nothing short of tragic to hear a litter of dogs has been born in a city inundated with homeless animals. But Ricahrd Belzer has been very good to the homeless animal community – I must give him the benefit of the doubt before maligning him.

Ummm…where does it say he got the dog from a rescue? Want an intact dog from a shelter? Come to Los Angeles and get one from the “largest adoption agency in the country”~(recently fired former General Manager Ed Boks).
Most of the dogs from the L.A. shelters come in healthy and immediately get sick due to poor kennel procedures. In fact, the second largest city in America has a shelter system with absolutely no operations or procedures manual. Doubt me? Call them and ask. This results in hundreds (more?) of animals being adopted and sent to their new homes without being spayed or neutered. You can’t put a dog with a respiratory infection under anesthesia for surgery, so the spay/neuter is “deferred.” There is no system in place to follow up to see if you actually altered the animal…so come and get your breeding stock, right here in L.A.!

how does anyone know he let his dog off leash.. maybe someone else let their male off and that dog made a bee line for Belzer’s dog.. if they got stuck, nothing you can do about that. As for aborting, not everyone will do that… Everyone is posting as if they know exactly what happened and are throwing a human being under the bus for hearsay. what happened to innocent until proven guilty. all you know is the titillating little piece above and the most disgusting venom comes spewing.
