SPORTS ILLUSTRATED DIDN'T DO MICHAEL PHELPS ANY FAVORS
Michael Phelps is everybody’s hero, but are we the only ones who admit that we think he looks like a supergeek on this Sports Illustrated cover? How could they do this to him? This photo will follow him for the rest of his life. To put it politely, it minimizes his attributes. The magazine bends over backwards to make sure their swimsuit models look good. They couldn’t give our Olympic paragon a break? We could take a better photo in our backyard.Posted by hoodlum on August 19, 2008

This is the same pose Mark Spitz did in 1972.
That’s why it was done this way!

That’s because he is ugly, Janet. What other way are they going to pose him?

Anonymous 6:07 PM. I thought so also….that he was a —shall we say—-slow thinker….like he can’t seem to answer questions in a strong manner. Maybe some water seeped into his brain. Anyhoo, every gold-digger ho within 100 miles will try to vamp him.

He answered questions in a mature and polite way. He appeared to think before he spoke, which is most unusual these days with shouting talking heads on TV and celebutards who swear and say whatever popped into their empty heads. Congrats to Michael Phelps!

I’m with you, Janet. I wouldn’t mind having him over to my backyard for an extended photo shoot. Or a few shoots. (Couldn’t resist).

They should have photoshopped his head to make him appear more handsome (don’t think they don’t normally do this).
Also, everything about the pose-the lack of a shirt, the way he is holding his hands on his waist, the ugly red background is completely UGLY and unattractive.
The photo editor needs to be fired for screwing up so royally.

He’s a star, and he looks like one. For god’s sake, why would anyone photoshop his natural face? He’s an athlete, not a Vogue model. Get over all of your superficial expectations.
This is PERFECTION in its human form.

Give the kid a break. He is a fantastic athlete. He’s not putting himself out there to be evaluated on his looks. he’s not zac efron or the jonas brothers. pick on tom cruise, or will smith who want to be in the public eye, but phelps does not deserve criticism for looking the way he does. he oculd have many girls right now, so i’m sure it doenst bother him. i think he looks perfectly normal. it must be awkward being tall with a swimmer’s body. point being, he has not “hollywood” so its unfair to speak about him as if he was lindsay lohan. he is a legitimate athlete, and a good one, so the press should stick to that. call the olsen twins butterfaces. Fine. they put themselves out there to be photographed in outfits and make the gossip columns. this guy does not.

They posed this photo to resemble Mark Spitz’s cover since he bested Spitz’s records, which is kind of cool. I like the fact that he looks like a normal, nerdy guy, I’m a photographer and I’m sick to death of normal looking people being photoshopped to death. At any rate, he is a good role model for “nerds.”
