THANK YOU, EMMA STONE

Emma Stone didn’t let a few late Oscar parties keep her from missing her LAX flight out of town this morning. She was last year’s Oscar winning Best Actress and created quite a stir when she presented the Best Director award at the Oscars last night. She said “It is the vision of a director that turns a movie into a work of art – these four men and Greta Gerwig created their own masterpieces this year.” It was a subtle but effective reminder of the constant absence of women the category. Men NEED to be reminded of this as often as possible until changes are made. People on Twitter later criticized Emma for being “dismissive” of the male nominees, but haven’t women in Hollywood (and other places) been dismissed for far too long? Nice work, Emma!

  1. All in all, it was a good night.

Not to belabor it, but even though we were disappointed that “The Shape of Water” failed to garner any acting awards, our take is that Frances and Sam were largely rewarded for an estimable body of previous work.

As a film overall, “Three Billboards” was reminiscent of “Little Miss Sunshine” (remember that DRECK?); both were movies essentially nothing–and will be largely forgotten as the years roll on.

But in the end, justice prevailed, and truly the Best Film and Best Director won. The Shape of Water is stunning and the Best Production Design trophy was also well-deserved.

And the Best Score winner? If you haven’t yet listened to Alexandre Desplat’s soundtrack, you’re in for a great experience. 😀

  2. you’re welcome, she ignores the spotlights aka fake world.

  3. Janet you seem to have a very poor opinion of men. Were you ever harmed by one?

  4. Stone’s intro was perfect. It both honored the five nominees and gently pointed out the disparity.

  5. Hogwash. Hollywood is run by the sweetest, most honest, most wonderful people in the known universe: Liberals/Progressives.

If Liberals/Progressives aren’t giving dames directing jobs, then the talent pool must be pretty bad. Of course, Oprah could offer 100 women (or men who are transitioning as women – I’m looking at you, Michael Moore) one million dollars each to deliver a film (“you get to direct, you get to direct, YOU get to direct!”) One hundred million is a drop in her sizable bucket. If these talented women can’t figure out a way to get a million bucks on screen, then they obviously don’t deserve a bigger budget.

And another thing. We don’t have awards for male and female directors. Why acting awards? Particularly with females calling themselves “actors”. Abolish sexed acting awards. You want to be taken seriously? Make it 13 nominations for best performer. Top two get awards. If it is two women, so be it. If it is two men, that’s the way it is. No bitching, no whining. If they keep the sex segregated categories, if a female refers to herself as an ” actor”, she is barred forever from getting an actress award. Its fair, no?

Let’s see if Janet is brave and lets this stand.
