THE OSCARS 2011: NO MOMENTS WORTH REVISITING

Is it just us, or was this the most predictable and dull Oscar show of all time? Not one surprise. No touching moments or hilarious moments. Granted, the stage effects and look of the show was glittery, but despite their appealing looks, James Franco and Anne Hathaway contributed very little. It was all too stiff and serious. Where is Ricky Gervais when we NEED him? The Social Network got ROBBED!

  1. James Franco looked baked…He seemed smug, like he had other places to be, and was too good for the room. Why won’t he look at the camera? And Anne Hathaway tried, but was just too over-the-top w/ her cheerleader antics, her ‘I’m not worthy’ bowing, her ‘woop’ screeches…Why couldn’t Billy Crystal stay and finish the night with something fun and interesting? I know they were ‘skewing younger’, but how about ‘skewing funnier’ next year…blah…

  2. Very bad, loser vibe in that show. Why does the Academy have such a hard time with the generation issue?

    Hosts were awful.

  3. sorry, the “Oscar-Dentures” are sold out!!
ANNE HAD BOUGHT THE LAST PAIRS………

  4. The highlight was seeing Kirk Douglas back on stage.
Kirk is an old school surviver. and it was an honor seeing the Douglas wit and charm on display. Considering the fact that he got a standing ovation, I believe that he was truly a
    welcomed presenter.

  5. There were so many awful aspects of this year’s Oscar show. Kirk Douglas’ appearance was great until he overstayed his welcome by about 5 minutes. The opening “Inception” parody didn’t generate enough laughs to justify its length. Franco and Hathaway were at odds: he clearly knew the writing wasn’t worth much so he basically seemed to drop out of sight for much of the night. Anne was game but her hoops and hollers were over the top. The lack of quality in many categories was epitomized by Randy Newman’s win for Best Song. Will anyone remember any of those nominated songs even a year from now? No way.

  6. I almost forgot: Michelle Williams deserves an award for Best Makeover Ever. I hardly recognized her. She looked amazing!

  7. The Annual fundraiser for Zionism was indeed very lackluster this year.

Natalie Hershlag’s win couldn’t even rally the troops

What they needed was for Chiam Levine to make an appearance and accept Carlos Estaban’s Octogon invitatin.

  8. Jerry D: I agree with you on the song catagory. I have ALREADY forgotten them. The one which Florence from Florence and the Machine and that other dude did together seemed to be going SOMEwhere and then abruptly STOPPED at a seeming unended spot. Was that IT??? The whole SONG? And WHAT were the lyrics? I couldn’t understand most of the lyrics coming out of the guy, and hers were hitting about 3 out of 4 for clarity, so overall, I ain’t got a CLUE what the hell they were singing about so shortly, but it did SOUND pretty.

I think they just gave it to Randy Newman because his was most UNDERSTANDABLE and then you had those darling cloying toys ripping your heart out too, so what the hell? Give it to him!

I agree too that Michelle Williams looked amazing, but I don’t know what you mean by “make-over”. She’s not been a dud in the looks dept. She’s a charmer, with a darling cut that fits her face and youth and charm, and her very simple dress covered in pearls looked lucious when taken in over all and with her bright face and hair.

Jennifer Hudson also looked awesome and perfectly beautiful. A shame she didn’t sing. I really wondered where her fiance was. He seems to have gone missing of late… since she slimmed down. has ANYONE seen him with her at any awards shows since she slimmed down?

He has a law degree, but last I heard he was going to try to be a “wrestler”. To have been engaged as long as they have, her lost all her family and he stuck by her thru that, and then they had a baby, and she slimmed down so beautifully, I just wonder if they’re still “on”?

  9. Agreed, Kirk Douglas overstayed his welcome big time; I almost turned the TV off. Go from the youngest hosts to the oldest presenter. Good transition! In retrospect, I should have turned off the TV. Most of the speeches were those god-awful list of names which the nominees are warned about year after year. They need to be sat in an auditorium and have to watch speech after speech for four hours–then maybe they will get a clue. However, I’m not going to risk another year of this crap. Starting next year I’ll look at any memorable clips on the internet.

  10. i do not care how long Kirk Douglas how long has been in Hollywood….the man is close to IMPOSSIBLE to comprehend…enough! Not pleasant to witness…. EVER + these old geezers NEVER know when to get the F OUT of the spotlight so winners can bask…just like Loretta Lynn at the Country Music Awards or whatever…. when that younger girl won…..she stood there RIGHT NEXT TO HER the WHOLE time the woman made her speech…embarrassing….keep these old farts out of these shows…or have a handler grab them by the arm and walk them away from the fucking winners. period. its ridiculous and uncalled for. period.

since i am in the dark ages I TAPED the 3+ hour show to the advantage of Fast Forwarding through MORE than one hour of bullshit I had NO interest in watching at all! HUGE help…..

  11. Trainwreck. Zero chemistry between the hosts, Franco looked like he was phoning it in, songs were terrible (Gwyneth? Really?), no real humor to speak of.

Somewhere, Ricky Gervais is laughing his ass off.

  12. And I’m sorry, but Kirk Douglas skeeved me out.

God bless him for being a survivor, but that does not mean it’s a good idea to put him on a stage.

  13. Zionists (and Jews) all over the world rejoice: ur talentless puppet won. One more proof of who’s pulling the strings at Hollyweird. And btw, “The Social Network” is a movie? Have we got that dumb?

  14. On the other hand, the most deserving film DID win Best Picture! Loved the book and the movie!

So looking forward to the others in the series:
    “The Duke’s Bunion”
    “The Prince’s Halitosis”
    and, of course,
    “The Queen’s Not-So-Fresh Feeling”

    Rule Britannia! 🙂

  15. All awards shows are a snooze by their very nature. I’m sure Franco and Hathaway did the best anyone could have considering no surprise awards were expected and none materialized. As for Ricky Gervais’ type ‘humor’, anyone can make demeaning jokes at another person’s expense. That doesn’t take talent, and is in fact a lowest common denominator substitute for it.

  16. The hosts were gosh awful…the whoops from Ms. Hathaway were ghastly, wish Franco was more present; let real comedians do the job. It was wonderful to see Kirk Douglas who was very funny. Amazed that “Social Network” won anything and wished “The Town” had been nominated. All in all a very disappointing show and way over the top; should tone in down during this very difficult economic times with the gowns, jewels, etc.

  17. As stated above, there was no comic relief by the two dud hosts. If you wanted to see comedy, I think it was the pre-red carpet interviews by the 6’3″ Robin Roberts. She dwarfed every man she interviewed, and the way they had to look up to her was hilarious.

More thoughts: Melissa Leo who won for best supporting actress: Her dress looks exactly like my Granny’s lace tablecloth.

Jennifer Hudson looked terrified, like what am I doing here (this is not saying anything against her great singing voice)

All in all, a total waste of time.

  18. James Franco WAS STONED OFF HIS ASS

To me he ruined the evening!

  19. Not with the majority of you – I enjoyed the evening. Especially at the end when you could hear Ann telling the kids over and over in an excited voice how well they preformed.
Franco was a little stiff, I will give you that, but Ann was gracious and genuine all the way through. When did it become a crime to be just a nice person?

  20. Natalie Portman is disgusting. I wish the girlfriend of her baby dadddy had been there, stood up, and screamed that she was a bitching slutty manstealer. Boy, THAT would be an everlasting ‘Oscar Moment’.

Sandra Bullock was trying too hard to be funny; I am going against many in saying I never liked her.

  21. We had crazy storms here in the midwest which caused my Oscar evening to be canceled (no cable); I was able to see Kirk Douglas and his appearance made me wince. Did he have major plastic surgery or what? The dude scared me?

Shucks my father lived to be 93 and he stilled looked like my father but KD???? If I didn’t hear his name I would have been like, “Who is that guy?”

Anyway after reading the blogs this morning about the winners and the performers I was actually glad my cable went out.

  22. What happened? I was so looking forward to James Franco. This did not show him in a good light at all. He has definately lost some of his “IT” factor due to this appearance.

So glad Christian Bale won Best Actor!!

  23. Franco must have blasted half a fattie in his room upstairs. He could care less about where he was and what he was doing. Bad choice. Hathaway tried too hard and failed.Bad choice. Only comics with giant brains work properly as hosts.
Kirk was the highlight of the show, even though he hijacked it a bit to watch people squirm. Kirk owned them and they new it!
Thankfully for PVR it took about twenty minutes to get through it.
    Worst Oscars ever.

  24. Kirk Douglas was awful-rude and obnoxious. Franco was just as expected- he couldn’t give a crap and was bored/baked out of his mind. Poor Anne Hathaway was trying her best, but she couldn’t do it all alone.

  25. It truly was one of the worst shows ever, I turned it off after an hour. As for Kirk Douglas, in one way I wanted to applaud him, he’s had a stroke, he’s 94, his son may be dying, but he’s still trying. On the other hand, he stayed on the stage way too long. The hosts were horrendous in just about every way, not funny at all.

  26. At 94 years old,to be able to walk on that stage and receive a standing ovation from his peers is an occasion that will long be remembered in The Douglas Family!!

  27. James Franco was uncharacteristically flat, (he says he has never smoked pot, so maybe he was just scared straight), and I thought Anne Hathaway looked like she was having a good time.

I did think there was ONE enjoyable, touching moment. It was the last few seconds of the show when the curtain rose behind the singing children, and all the Oscar winners appeared. That, coupled with what the children were singing, was very dear.

  28. I agree with Village on the ending being a nice touch. I loved the children singing but whoever directed them all to act out their song lines screwed up because they weren’t in unison and it was distracting and didn’t look spontaneous or natural in the least. Childrens choirs are beautiful when they stand there poised and open their little mouths and let their pure voices swell, nothing needs to be added to that. I also loved all the winners coming forward behind them and loved that I could hear Ann as she bent down congratulating the kids warmly. She seemed very naturally loving towards them. I’m sure she’ll make a great mother someday.

I also agree the host/s need to be comedians again. No one did it better than Billy Crystal. His beginning montages are still memorable and funny to recall, and I always loved his quick wit. Carson also did a great job.

  29. My 2 cents: Agree that the hosts were lame. Hathaway tried too hard. Franco didn’t try hard enough. Kirk Douglas was creepy and the dirty old man you can’t wait to get away from because he still thinks he still has it and you want it. Disgusting. Not to mention he should have been closed captioned on the bottom of the screen because you couldn’t understand what he was saying. Leo’s “F” bomb during her speech showed what a classy broad she isn’t. Overall, the night was disappointing except I do believe Colin Firth deserved his Oscar. The final song was sweet but I agree the hand movements were unnecessary and distracting. Bring back a comedian to host next year’s award show!!

  30. this was the worst oscars ever!!!! EVER!!!! anne hathaway and junkie james franco were horrible. how could the academy do this to me and millions of viewers, what was worst is that I almost knew who would walk away with every big award, natalie (golden jew) was a dead giveaway before the candidates were even anounced. the academy is so predictable. this might be the last year I watch and I have been watching for over 30years. they really f***ing suck. I know thats what melissa leo really meant to say.

I was very happy for the kings speach though.

  31. Natalie, Kirk wears a pullup now. He has no interest in sex. He was just performing. The man has had a stroke so speech is difficult. Creepy? No, he’s just a classy, very old man. He was having fun.
    I am Spartacus!
    Respect.

  32. Cue Melissa Leo’s “I’m an OSCAR WINNER and I still can’t get work!” tour in 3…2…

Her relative obscurity up to now seems completely appropriate.

And though I didn’t see the show, I can only imagine (your comments help :)) how uncomfortable Kirk’s “disgraceful longevity” (to quote a favorite line from “Night of the Iquana”) made many feel. Good!—it may be the closest brush with reality those folks ever get.

Five years from now—assuming it’s still broadcast—this pointless show will be hosted entirely by comic-book super heroes; we’re just witnessing its last grasps at relevancy.

  33. I thought that James Franco was scared Sh*tless and Anne Hathaway was over compensating most of the time! Though I do like them both as actors.

Melissa Leo was just shocked and was not trying to make waves. You could she she was just stunned that she won.

  34. It is said Melissa Leo campaigned relentlessly for the award. Her F bomb, I believe, was deliberate in order to generate talk about her. Otherwise, she’s pretty bland and forgetable.

  35. I agree the hosts were dull, but the lines were written for them. WHO wrote them? Crucify THEM! Ann gave it her all and was beautiful, energetic, and sang well. I HATED Paltrows singing. Whoever told her she could sing? AWFUL!

  36. My $.02: I usually watch just to see what people are wearing, and don’t really watch the show especially when the winners are almost a given.

The hosts were excruciating to watch, what little I saw of them.

I loved seeing Kirk Douglas. Yes he may have overstayed his welcome, but how many true Hollywood legends do we have left?

I hope to God I look half as good as Helen Mirren when I’m her age.

Mark Wahlberg was robbed. But I’m glad that Christian Bale and Melissa Leo won. I’m partial to movies made here in Mass. and hometown boys who make good. Oh, and Melissa Leo drops F-bombs (hate that expression) all the time so people shouldn’t be surprised. Patrick, she was nominated for Frozen River (which not a lot of people have seen. And she was excellent on Homicide Life on the Street.

  37. Kirk was on the stage a little too long, but juxtapose that appearance with his overall career then his appearance is a little more bearable. I don’t see how Jesse Eisenberg was robbed. I watched him on the red carpet talking with Robin Roberts, he’s the same character. He spoke on the red carpet as he did portraying Jeff Zuckerberg. No difference. Im not even sure the real Jeff Zuckerberg speaks that way. I kinda doubt it. Gywneth should stick to Glee where her marginal voice can be somewhat controlled.

  38. I respectfully disagree. Kirk Douglas had his time in the sun. Now he needs to get off the stage and leave it to the younger generations. This applies to celebrities, politicians, business executives, and all elderly people. They have such entitlement issues! “I’m entitled to __________ (you name it) because I’m old.” What kind of lame argument is that? Go home, take out your teeth, and shut the F up. Maybe it’s because I’m dealing with a lot of elderly people in my life right now, but I’m sick of their attitude of being deserving of whatever they want just because they’re old.

  39. People are never happy, you get Ricky Gervais to tell the jokes at one show, the media causes an uproar and then you are surprised that the Oscars were boring? I’m sure Franco was pissed because he wanted to do more but they wouldnt let him

  40. I am sorry Natalie, I disagree with you. We should have the utmost respect for our elder’s. In my opinion they are not treated the way they should be treated. Some people assume because they are old, that they should just shut up, and F off!! Senior citizens should be put on pedastal and be given more support, where there is a need. How humiliating for a senior, no money, no care just sit around and wait to die. I understand you working with seniors and having this view, but maybe it is time for you to find a different job. A wise senior once told me that it takes someone with a special gift to work with the elderly and they should be truly blessed. I totally agree.

  41. Hey Muffin top, I don’t work with seniors. This is just my opinion based on the elderly people in my life who I have to listen to and deal with. I respect your opinion, and you’re entitled to it.

  42. I couldn’t stand Hathaways over the top cheerleader attitude,no one could get that old fart Douglas off the stage soon enough,I hate Natalie with her:I am so talanted and better that you and please Gwyneth you are not very good actor but as a singer you suck big time, stick with your day job ,we all are sick and tired of your so called singing career.

  43. The Oscar hosts sucked altho Anne H tried hard…. James Franco was a total bore. Definetely needed the spice of Ricky G.

  44. I didn’t miss any of the other Oscar hosts. I liked the show with Franco and Anne. I thought Kirk Douglas was the only talent that actually commanded the stage and the moment.
