THE SARAH JESSICA PARKER/KIM CATTRALL FEUD IS ALL ABOUT MONEY

Okay, let’s clarify this whole Sarah Jessica ParkerKim Cattrall feud- it’s about MONEY. Jason Lewis played Samantha’s boyfriend on the series and he admitted HE’s siding with SJP. He raves about how he adored and appreciated Sarah’s kindness on the show but held back at saying ANYTHING nice about Kim Cattrall. WE have never met anyone who didn’t love Sarah and our personal experience with her has always been delightful. Here’s what destroyed Sarah and Kim’s friendship: Sarah was the star of the series and producer and undoubtedly paid more, but Kim’s character really caught on – especially with gay men who identified with her playful promiscuity and sexual openness. Kim KNEW her character was popular – she had tons of fans – and expected more money. Apparently she was never paid what she thought she was worth and resentment grew. When Kim turned down the third Sex & the City movie despite the good script, she knew she was denying her costars and crew money and jobs they might need. Not nice. We wish they’d recast Samantha.

  1. Since when is it Kim’s responsibility to see that other actresses make money? If they want to make money, let them earn it elsewhere. If…as you suggest…it’s up to Kim, then she IS OWED MORE MONEY.

  2. Kim did deserve more money. Women need to value their worth and demand to be paid accordingly. The first movie was passable, the second movie atrocious. SJP has floated the idea for a third movie a few times. No one wants that. They are too old for their roles.
However, If SJP wants it and has backing, Kim’s character could be written out as dying from breast cancer which she received treatment for on the tv show.

  3. Gullible much? A good script? None of the other movies had good scripts. And maybe Jason Lewis just wants a job and knows which side his bread is buttered on. Finally, I loved the show for a long time and connected to Carrie’s struggles, but found during the last few seasons that she was unbearable, resting on bad acting mannerisms, the stupid, cute/sexy giggles drove me mad. The character did not grow up.

  4. Thanks for the inside story, Janet.

In our opinion, Kim was irreplaceable in that role. We like her–and it’s distressing to hear that she may have been the cause of the feud with SJP, which has devolved to a RIDICULOUS and disgraceful level, with the Twitter war in the wake of Kim’s brother’s tragic death.

BUT, as producer (assuming the title wasn’t a vanity concession), it fell to SJP to make the project happen, including providing consideration for Kim’s salary demands.

Absent a compromise and the project going forward, no one wins.

  5. This is one facet of the story. I know someone who worked on the show and talked about the mean girl culture sjp cultivated, long before it became a gossip news story.

  6. pfffffffffff, america is back where it’s all about: F.CKING MONEY, folks!!!!!!!!

  7. It is a long-time feud that started because SJP made $1M per episode, and the other stars only made $350K. KC felt she was a “serious” actress who deserved more. The producers didn’t agree, nor did the other actresses. They formed a clique and shut out KC. Hearing the guy who played Smith suck up to SJP is no surprise at all… he’s not exactly turning away acting roles.

  8. I’m sorry but the second “Sex & the City” movie was awful. How can you say that the third movie’s script was good? Ick!

  9. The movies were insipid… Why should KC do another movie if they are not going to pay her well? She’s in her early sixties, maybe she wants to have control over her own life and not be a part of SJP’s mean girl narrative…

  10. Sex and the City? More like Sex and the Seniors!! When SJP was asked if she could reveal the major plot theme of the sequel, she retorted “depends”; as in the girls developing a designer line of depends. Well, at least that hasn’t been done before.

  11. VERY interesting thread; and at the risk of overstaying our welcome here:

As Janet pointed out, much more is at stake here than the two strong personalities involved.

Anyone else remember Terry Murphy–who used to read the news on KNXT-KCBS years ago? Also like Janet, she was originally a Chicagoland journalist, and eventually co-hosted HARD COPY (a GOSSIP-FEST if ever there was one). 😀

Anyway, Terry had a very thoughtful way of signing off the newscast; she would say: “Thanks for joining all of us at Channel Two News, including the talented men and women who work behind the scenes.”

It was a very needed reminder of the hundreds of people who remained nameless, even as the “stars” were allowed to shine. And like the luminaries, they, too, have bills to pay.

As PRODUCER, SJP’s failure to strike a deal with KC has far-reaching implications. Imagine for a moment, this possible solution, expressed via a statement from Sarah Jessica:

“As producer and ONE of the stars of SATC III, I’m pleased to announce that we’ve wrapped shooting, which only happened after we were gifted with a script that we all fell in love with. We just couldn’t wait to bring our characters back to life on-screen, for their next chapter! As such, each of the four of us was paid the exact same amount of money. We wouldn’t have had it any other way. See you at the premiere!”

(Full disclosure: we’ve never actually seen “Sex And The City,” but we know Kim to be a very skilled performer. Given the series’ impressive success, replacing KC at this stage would be something like going forward with “I LOVE LUCY” without Fred, Ethel, or Ricky, in our opinion.)

  12. It’s not Kim’s job to employ people, that’s the studios job and SJP’s as producer.

Perhaps we need to look at the real story hear, SJP wanted $10million to make the movie and a hefty back end, the studio said no so it’s SJP putting the crew out of work.

Anyone with half an ounce of imagination could come up with a story that didn’t include Kim, for example she has finally succumbed to breast cancer , the movie opens at her funeral and the other girls decide to take a sad/funny road trip to celebrate her life or finish her bucket list.

  13. Libby, you are absolutely right. The whole cancer storyline was also supposed to make Kim look bad, with being bald and those ridiculous wigs, but Kim slayed all her looks and has a nice shaped head unlike sjp. Sjp is everything that is unattractive.

  14. SJP was a nice girl in the 80’s and turned into a mean girl with the Sex in the City series.

She was always a homely, bony little thing with excellent acting skills. Then she somehow became glamorized with the success and amazing scripts of Sex in the City.
