WAS DORIS DAY'S CRUSH ON STEPHEN BOYD UNREQUITED?

doriscut%20day-1.jpg
We happen to love Doris Day movies – she’s always so cheerful. She might not be so happy to learn that there’s a new biography coming out about her sexy private life. “Doris Day: The Reluctant Star,” written by David Bret, will be released in the UK this summer and early leaks reveal some tantalizing assertions. We were floored when the author casually remarked that Doris had crushes on gay men like Rock Hudson and Stephen Boyd. We had no idea Stephen Boyd (really handsome in “Ben Hur” and that New York career girl movie “The Best of Everything”) was GAY! Is this common knowledge, or pure conjecture? Any experts out there?

  1. Couldn’t say first hand, but this may be wishful thinking … based in part on Boyd’s very gung ho attitude about introducing a gay subtext into his screen relationship with Judah Ben-Hur, played by the recently departed Charlton Heston.
The subtext was the idea of screenplay contributor Gore Vidal, who agreed with the director that the film somehow wasn’t working. They told Boyd about the idea, but they DIDN’T tell Heston; the results speak for themselves.
This was all detailed in the book, “The Celluloid Closet,” and the excellent documentary of the same name.
Boyd was a magnetic presence — to put it mildly — and his work in “Ben-Hur” is riveting.
He was so committed to this portrayal of a boyhood friend who was also a former lover of Ben-Hur, that it would be very easy to construe that he was, in “real life,” gay.
Again, I don’t believe there is evidence supporting that assertion.

  2. I will tell this again:
MORE THAN 95 PERCENT OF ALL THE MALE CELEBS ARE BI-SEXUAL OR………….JUST FAGGOTS!!

  3. Janet, in 2008 Doris Day exposes’ really do not make the news. yawn….

  4. I remember that Stephen Boyd was very much in love with a blond actress (she was in an Elvis movie and a beach movie with George Hamilton. She left hollywood to become a nun. According to the papers Stephen was very upset.

  5. Joachim, my friend, learning from the past helps us understand the present.

  6. He looks like Chad Everett who I heard was gay, too. He also starred in the camp classic THE OSCAR w/hoopy Elke Sommer & Tony Bennett & Jill St. John, put that one on DVD it’s a laff riot!

  7. Gerard is correct. 95% of male celebrities are bi-sexual or faggots. Lucifer awaits.

  8. From THE BEST OF EVERYTHING:
“And you want me to type this?”
“No, I want you to beat it out on a native drum!”

  9. Who cares? I love her movies!
She’s still alive and I hope she’s happy because she’s brought me a lot of happiness with her movies – Pillow Talk is my fave.

  10. Dear Janet: Shouldn’t you remove the hateful and ignorant comments above? Would you allow messages with words like N***** or K*** in them to remain as part of this here discussion? Hate Hurts Everybody. Love Heals.

  11. I love Doris Day’s movies and her voice and she has cheered me up on many a grim occasion. Who cares about an infatuation she had over 40 years ago? Who hasn’t developed a crush on a co-worker? From what I understand she has been an upstanding woman with a big heart and I respect her immensely.

  12. I’ve had a crush on Rock Hudson. Whether or not he prefers women is beside the point. He’s gorgeous and sweet.
How many of us HAVEN’T fallen in love with someone who is inaccessible for one reason or another?

  13. Bonjour à tous !
Peu importe….Stephen BOYD était une personne sublime et un acteur formidable.
Je vis à Paris et la France aime et a toujours respecté les grands acteurs.

  14. I don’t think Doris Hart really cared because she really didn’t care for white men as lovers like many female actress do then and today.

  15. I meant Doris Day not Doris Hart the tennis player. From my impression through readings mostly, DH didn’t care for men at all.

  16. What do you mean by “more than 95%”, gerard? Is it 95% or isn’t it? Give us the exact number, since you think you have all the answers!

  17. Raquel Welch tells the story below…a quote from Boyd to Ms. Welch as she tried to seduce him explaining why not…‘I’d like to tell you a little story that was told to me by John Gielgud when I was working with the National Theatre. You’ll have to think about it for a moment but I hope you get my drift: An actress is a little bit more than a woman, but an actor is a little bit less than a man.’

  18. Boyd was married twice. This was a recent rumour put out by Raquel Welch whose crush for Boyd went unrequited.

  19. Doesn’t the Pied Piper keep an album of all the gay actors in old Hollywood? He might chime in on this.

  20. whoah this blog is magnificent i like reading your posts.

Keep up the great work! You already know, many persons are searching round for this info, you can aid them greatly.

  21. Raquel Welch was and is so full of herself and conceated that she really thinks that because a man turned her down he must be gay..maybe he had a girl at the time he was faithful to..Stephen Boyd was a great actor and you can’t find a bad thing said about him..sad he died at 45 on a golf course of a heart attack right in front of his Wife, Raquel..not every man wanted you then or now..you spread a rumor you had no proof of and if true SO WHAT? None of your d..n business..

  22. Richardo, you are absolutely right! Rachel Welch chased after Boyd but he didn’t feel the same way. Welch is just sore because he rejected her. He went for a certain woman and obviously, she wasn’t it. As for being gay, no way! I had a famous uncle who was in Ben Hur and there is not a chance in hell Stephen Boyd was gay.

  23. Is there anyone who was witness to the passionate love affair between Stephen Boyd and Marisa Mell? By the time they made “The Great Swindle,” you can see the chemistry jump off the screen. Was Boyd simply infatuated with his great love interests and in the end, commitment-phobic? His final marriage to his secretary does not count…that appears more of a platonic companionate relationship.
