“Duplicity” ia another example of “the emperors new clothes.” (No one wants to admit they don’t understand it.) There are may reviews praising Julia Roberts and Clive Owen and their spicy dialog, but few reviewers seem to bring up the fact that the PLOT is a convoluted mess, almost impossible to understand. It seems most reviewers are afraid to confess they couldn’t figure out what the heck is going on in this story. It’s exhausting trying to keep the flashbacks and flashforwards straight. The movie has some very appealing scenes and characters, but is it really out of line to expect a plot that a person with normal observational powers can follow? Did any readers out there really understand this film?

I HATED it. Can’t believe Metacritic gave it a 69. I was also distracted/depressed that Julia didn’t look better. Obvious work done and in one scene you can see her jiggly mommy belly. Hey, I have 2 kids and have that, too – but hello! SPANX.
The plot was awful. I didn’t think there was any chemistry between Roberts/Owen.
So see “I Love You, Man” instead.
She has admitted utter contempt for conservatives and republicans, so there goes potential movie earnings. Not a one will go see this thing. Her buddies, the elite, they won’t go either, and the dirty masses won’t go to fill her trough.
She takes a 5 year break to raise kids and now comes back commaning 15M a pix. Good luck.
Clive Owen is a WUSS. And another observation: Julia is not aging well.
Julia is not a talented, nor likeable actress. Therefore, her movies will bomb.
She will do any antiamerican film, and people lost respect for her.
The globalwarming sham kept audiences away but she gets kudos from media elites and her peers.

It’s pretty simple. People spent more money to watch two guys in a bromance than Horse face Julia with Clive in a traditional romance dramedy. I don’t know what the budget was for Duplicity but I am guessing they aren’t too happy with it coming in 3rd with ~14.5 million for the weekend. Julia just doesn’t have what it takes for her to helm a movie anymore.
Janet, the movie wasn’t that hard to follow. Maybe you had other thingd on your mind, like what your next blog post was. Most hollywood movies ae scripted to the 8th grade level of comprehension so Molly Minivan and Johnny Lunchbucket can follow. This one is no exception. Julia Roberts is horrid and way past her early 90’s prime. Childbirth has destroyed her career.

Haven’t seen the movie and probably won’t until it comes out on DVD. Can’t really afford going to the movies right now, but hopefully that will change as the economy picks up……….
Loved the movie. Contrary to what some above have said Clive and Julia have great chemistry. Theater where I saw movie was full and people were commenting when leaving that they like it. Some people just don’t want to like certain people. Judge for yourself and forget the hate mongers.
She is not pretty, she is not a good actress. She is and always will be an adultress who for some reason wanted to take the non-descript and non-rich Danny away from his wife who were in the process of reconciling.
I just wonder: HOW BALD WILL HER ARM-PITS BE TODAY, folks?
Clive is hot, but I am not going to pay to watch him with her. I will catch his next movie

Just because one is conservative, does not mean one is right wing or a nut. You on the other hand are left bent single minded, just like julia. You argue your position by demonizing the opposition, how uneducated. She has made it clear she only wants liberals and dems to go see her movies. So be it. She is a hateful human being. And message to hollyood, words matter. As she gets older, she will look on the outside like she is on the inside; true bitter ugly. Like Michael Jordan said in regards to not bashing Republicans or conservatives, “Republicans buy shoes too.” Learn something baby.
If one thinks she is a pretty woman, one needs glasses. And she must have hit the casting couch many times to even be in one movie.
Conservatives are so bitter. They even feel compelled to spew at a gossip site. If you’re unhappy, no need to share to total strangers. The subject was the complexity of the plot for Duplicity. I don’t mind Julia, love Clive and love Paul Giamatti. It wasn’t bad!

Can’t wait to see it. Finally a movie with grownups, stars I can actually recognize, actors who actually act. The comments in this thread are truly bizarre. I appreciate that both Julia & Clive are middle-aged family people in real life. Julia has a “mommy tummy”? Great. I’d rather look at people who are naturally good looking, “naturally” of course including real human flaws, than the plastic faced, stick thin, no talent, hacks that currently dominate the entertainment world today.
By the way, have never heard Julia mention that she hates republicans, and for someone with Irish/Anglo type skin, she is aging quite well.

My dear PS, I am not a dem, nor particularly liberal. Politically, I run pretty much right down the center & have never been affiliated with any party. I believe everyone has a right to their opinion & now, thanks to the internet, everyone, not just the rich famous & undeserving, can say what they think. When Hollywoods elite spout off, I find it amusing, or stupid, or sometimes agree with them, but what these people do has no bearing on how I choose a movie. I see movies if I like the idea of the story and like the actors. There aren’t a lot of good choices out there these days.
So Poopie, everytime someone brings up Julia Roberts or, basically 85% of Hollywood actors, you announce that conservatives don’t agree with them, therefore you won’t be watching their films? Doesn’t leave many movies for you to see.

I watch movies even with actors who I don’t like starring in them. In the case of Julia Roberts, who I don’t particularly care for, her movie might be something I will order from Netflix when it comes out on DVD, but I wouldn’t go to the theater and pay the insanely high ticket price to watch it.
I agree with Poopie and Anon you wouldn’t understand because most of hollywood share the same views you do. It’s like when Linda Ronstadt said it was a real conflict for her (at a concert) knowing there were Republicans and Christians in the audience it “clouds her enjoyment”. I’d have to be insane to pay money to see that woman, they’re the ones who let you know they don’t like you if they had just kept their mouths shut we wouldn’t know.
The only good movie she was ever in was of course “Pretty Woman”. This movie was a smash hit because of its unusual story. That wide wide mouth opened up many times, which was probably why she got the part. A wide mouth prostitute conjures up thoughts of kinkiness.
i saw this movie and i liked it! good chemistry between Owen and Roberts! not a masterpiece but very pleasant movie!
I don’t like her Parasite Leach husband..he’s not a nice person period! and she supports him. He’s not even very attractive looking. As for this movie, I heard it’s a hard mess to follow and gives you a headache and her skin looks lousy!
