WHEN FREDERICK’S OF HOLLYWOOD RULED THE BOULEVARD

Video via: Dangerous Minds.net
Long before Victoria’s Secret, Frederick’s of Hollywood ruled the world of women’s undergarments. For many years they were located right on Hollywood Boulevard and did a huge mail order business. Women in small towns yearned for those foam rubber hips and bottoms, crotchless girdles, and inflatable bras. We remember shopping there for 50’s style bullet bras like Madonna wore. Here’s a little video introducing the original Mr Frederick – the brains behind the peekaboo business.

  1. Bullet bras Janet? More like torpedoes. Even if Fredericks fashion could have considered daring at the time, least the unmentionables were covered. Back then, women spent five bucks to look, today, some women spend 5 grand to look bad.

  2. 2 bras for $5.95. Those were the days. I love looking at old ads like this. Thanks Janet.

  3. One thing really stands out in these pics and it was a time when California was still a good place to live and had not been overrun by illegals. Think about it!

  4. our local mall has a Frederick’s of Hollywood store LOL

  5. Lisa Rinna had to be sedated when the landmark Hollywood store finally closed its doors.

Where else was she gonna find crotch-less gowns for the red carpet? 🙂

  6. Is that an ass-less girdle I see? Mmm, the women WERE pretty raunchy, even way back then. Must be an easy entry access item I guess. Maybe that’s where Liberace used to shop?!?

  7. Casonia Sade Logenberry...Rude and ungrateful people on your show and are the men ever going to get there act together and really learn the menu and gather up the side and listen and work together as a team. Elisa is a good cook and too bad her personalit says:

Frederick is Sexy and slick and really foxy ass clothing and any woman caught dead in that get up is really rocking it out and really looking smoking hot and really lovely and yes Frederick will alway be around to Rock your Fantastic and make you look incredible and Yummy and know it is time to see where they go and what happens down the road!

  8. Love the White Trash Debutantes song “Fredricks of Hollywood”!

  9. The only type of woman that wore the more revealing items of clothing in the 50’s were the vamps and harlots that worked the taverns. ………That said, I am sure there were a few men that wore them too. LOL

  10. I grew up reading the Frederick’s catalog. It was so fun and it was way less slutty back then. The clothes were sexy in that Marilyn Monroe sort of way. I actually managed to talk my prude of a mother into buying me my first bikini from them. It made me so happy.

  11. @Janet:
    A Blast from the past!!

Thank you for reminding your readers that there was a simpler time mixed with glamour that found it’s way to our home via the trusted mailbox. I often say that the world as we knew it is gone, but I am so thankful to have shared that season with so many others. Reaching into your archives introduces your *younger readers to a time back in the day long before the “pricy” era of Victoria Secrets!!

  12. Mrs. Honoria Pilkinghorne the White Trash Debutantes are a great band!
I’m sure Ginger Coyote would have some vintage Fredericks in her fabulous wardrobe!

  14. Jerry Hall was inspired and by FoH. Bought his stuff and continued to sported FH fashion in Europe. Europe loved her look.

  15. Casonia Logenberry of Seattle is really crazy about Hells kitchen...Massive about of friends never watch the show and is turned off by the rudeness and swearing and abusive hurtful words.. says:

Style always comes back sooner or later and Sex will always be here until the end of time and romantic clothing will never leave fashion and woman want what they want and crave what they want and men love to see us dress up and so they can dress us down.?
