WILLY DEVILLE SHOULD BE IN THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME

It was one year ago today that probably our all-time favorite singer (Sorry, Elvis!) Willy DeVille passed away. We can’t say enough good things about him. We’ll never forget his macho posturing onstage or his ethnic street-wise songs filled with romantic yearning. He was a fierce and foppish dresser – from his elegant velvet collared frock coats to his exaggerated pompadour. He did steampunk before it had a name. This is a very early photo of Willy and his first wife Toots, whom he married at 17. She bears a strong resemblance to Amy Winehouse. We think Willy should be inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame – please sign this petition.

  1. Uhm, Winehouse bears a strong resemblance to her, or rather, her type. Winehouse is the less original here – she is about 50 years and millions of cans of hairspray behind. Just proves a recent point I made on this site. Right Sally?

  2. i have never heard of this guy and i am ____ yrs old……

  3. DeVille was a super-cool singer on the fringes of the New Wave, when New Wave was actually cool (mid to late-seventies).

I always felt he was one of those people – the opposite of someone like Madonna – who was just too far ahead of the curve. It earned him massive credibility, but ensured he would never be filthy rich.

He was one of the greats, and an example of how true genius often goes unnoticed.

  4. Too bad his 1st wife – Toots I mean – was kinda psycho bitch…

  5. Willy was awesome, coolest guy around. Great music, exceptional voice.
