LIL NAS X: QUEEN OF THE RED CARPET?

You would THINK that since Lil Nas X just signed that contract to be Brand Ambassador for YSL, that he would show off the brand on the red carpet at the MTV Music Awards. But apparently YSL’s elegant collection was just not exciting enough for Nas! He prefers extravagant and outrageous, so he wore an original hoop skirt and headpiece by Harris Reed, a 26 year old UK/American with an ultra-modern philosophy, and little interest in street-style. Reed is inspired by Elizabethan excess and thinks everyone should look like a queen – both men and women. His models are all tall and skinny and gender fluid – you can barely tell the boys from the girls. Maybe Nas signed up with the wrong company…

JAMES CHARLES: TRYING WAY TOO HARD

Internet makeup artist James Charles turned up at the MTV VMA show SCREAMING for attention in this terrifying (Blac Chyna inspired?) outfit. We like his Brigitte Nielsen haircut, but from the hair down, he’s a disaster. How many straps, rhinestones, and zippers can be packed onto one ensemble? It’s every current fad rolled into one look. We’re not sure who James’ fans are – young girls who want to learn about makeup, or older men interested in other things. But we’re sure he’s caught everybody’s attention.

BELLA HADID : NAUGHTIER THAN GIGI FOR THE MTV VMA’S

The MTV VMA red carpet arrivals are notoriously sexy and creative – some wear space suits and some wear flying garters. Case in point: Bella Hadid’s strappy outfit will be hard to beat – she already makes her sister Gigi’s attire look plain. Award shows finally figured out that models liven up any red carpet event and started inviting them in quantity. Even the celebrities stop and ogle the models and paparazzi are all over them.

Aretha Franklin Fashion Madonna MTV Video Music Awards

FORGET MADONNA’S MTV SPEECH – WHAT ABOUT THAT CRAZY OUTFIT!!

We’ve heard PLENTY about Madonna’s appearance on the MTV Video Awards – viewers were puzzled by her pointless rambling about an audition early in her career when she sang an Aretha Franklin song and was convinced that it changed the course of her life. (?) Madonna was called out for her lousy Aretha Franklin “tribute” but she insists she was only on the show to present the award for Video of the Year and was encouraged to reminisce about Aretha and it was NOT a tribute. With all this fuss about her speech, Madonna’s crazy Arabic outfit was almost forgotten. WHY she was dressed in a monumentally unflattering big black wool dress with mountains of jewelry and a headband with protrusions is the REAL mystery. Madonna was recently in Marrakech, so maybe she went shopping on a Berber neighborhood. Whatever- she looked absurd.

Flop Host Katy Perry MTV Video Music Awards

WHAT DID YOU REALLY THINK OF KATY PERRY AS MTV VIDEO AWARDS HOST?

Katy Perry gave us a lot to look at while hosting the VMA Awards – a total of TEN different outfits – all of them okay, but not drop dead brilliant. What was REALLY awkward was Katy’s monologue and commentary between award introductions. She tried to toss off some jokes, but the audience just FROZE and squirmed and didn’t laugh at all. In fact they looked bored while she was speaking. Audience close-ups revealed nothing but YAWNS! It was repeatedly embarrassing but Katy carried on. It makes one wonder – did writers DESERT her? When a stand-up comic hosts, we can depend on a lot of timely laughs because they have great writers. What happened to Katy? She TRIED, but she flopped big time as a spontaneous host. Looks aren’t EVERYTHING.

Kesha’s dress is what comes up when you Google “Quinceanera.” Too many ruffles – and what do you call that color? Is it greyish-pink or pinkish beige? Either way – far too drab, and all that fabric is not flattering. A BALL GOWN- as wrong as you can get for MTV!

ALEC BALDWIN HAS NO COMMENT ABOUT DAUGHTER IRELAND’S ROMANCE WITH A RAPPER

Ireland Baldwin, 18, seemed to enjoy showing off her girlfriend, rapper Angel Haze, 23, as they held hands on the red carpet at the VMA’s. Ireland DOES seem happier with Angel than she was with her last boyfriend, surfer Slater Trout. Her parents, Kim Basinger and Alec Baldwin have been conspicuously silent about their daughter’s relationship. It’s probably for the best – Alec has a habit of throwing around gay insults when he loses his temper.

RITA ORA CAN DO NO WRONG IN THE LOOKS DEPARTMENT

Rita Ora knows how to have fun with fashion. She’s consistently worthy of second glances. By day, she puts bizarre combinations together in a great way and doesn’t play by the rules. Yet she’s able to glam it up bigtime like Lana Turner or Marilyn Monroe for the red carpet. And she does it all without any apparent silicone implants! Don’t know about her singing, but she’s got THE LOOK.
